FireEeYore, I just had a feeling as what happened to your MIL was so much like Teddy’s infection. I remember now that when we sent him to the hospital and the infection was discovered his mind was not that clear. It only took a couple of days for him to think more clearly. His infection cleared in about 9 days. I suggest also that an advance directive is really very important. All you have to do is fill in the answers from what you ask your MIL. The hospital will keep a copy as should MIL doctors. I keep a copy for myself in the car and at home along with a list of all my Doctors, Meds and their phone numbers. Actually the hospital I use insists on a DNR. Hoping MIL feels better real soon!

Thank you everyone for your replies. Here’s the latest:
— one stent had started to fail so now they will be replaced every 6 weeks instead of two months
–bleeding occurred during stent change so rather than blood thinners they are putting in a “screen” according to my brother-in-law
–blood culture came back positive – testing for MRSA
–will take 6 weeks to clear blood infection so until then all treatment is put on hold
–the group at Robert Wood Johnson NB said to cancel the scans scheduled for 2/20 since SIRSpheres will be a long way off, if at all now
–I put a call into the primary onco to see if he will order CT of head to see if this is anywhere else based on her behavior – still waiting for that call backMy BIL said one of the “regular” doctors at Capital Health asked him about an advanced directive….he is unaware of one and does not feel my MIL can make that decision right now. He also said he hopes that this process goes quickly for her sake as she is emotionally and mentally checked out.

I am sorry to hear about your loved one. As you know, I am taking care of my Mom (76) who has ext. bile duct cancer. She was doing fine with an internal stent and then went for her 1st and only chemo treatment. After that she became so weak she is unable to get out of bed herself. The surgeon in NY originally said have Mom get chemo and then return to see if she was a surgery candidate. With this illness I am afraid my hope was taken. I now do the best I can for Mom. I hope you are feeling better.
Bless You and Your Loved OnesFebruary 14, 2012 at 5:26 pm #57667marionsModeratorAlthough, we don’t see it frequently on this site this cancer however, has a tendency to form blood clots. (Trousseau sign of malignancy) Be assured that this is an unpredictable and spontaneous response and that it cannot be predicted beforehand. You will know more real soon. Please, do not worry yourself about not being with her it is not in your control. As soon as you are feeling better, you will be able to do what you have been doing all along – tending to your MIL’s needs. Please, keep us posted.
Hugs and love,
MarionFebruary 14, 2012 at 2:05 pm #57666lainySpectatorWow, I had the feeling something was going on didn’t count on what they found.
Please don’t feel guilty as you would feel more guilty if you got her sick with what you have! She is in a good place and being taken care of. Please keep us updated
and you just feel better.
P.S. I am not sure if the clots can cause the Bilirubin to rise. I hope they also check for infection.February 14, 2012 at 2:01 pm #57665fireeeyoreMemberYes, my husband & his brother took her to the ER. Her bili is up to 5.9 (was at 1.4 on Wednesday). They found “small” blood clots in her lungs. I’m awaiting further news. I just felt so helpless being unable to be there with them due to my illness.

MarionFebruary 14, 2012 at 1:25 am #57663lainySpectatorDear Fireeyore, Teddy was between his aborted Whipple and the real deal. We were at my sons’ when all took place out of town. Teddy was not doing well and we were watching TV and all of a sudden he lost all control of bodily functions. Called Paramedics who rushed him to the hospital as his blood pressure plummeted. Turned out it was an ecoli infection!!! I would get your MIL in to an ER quickly.
February 13, 2012 at 11:22 pm #6363fireeeyoreMemberHI everyone. My MIL (IHCC dx 12/20/11, 10 cm, not surgical candidate, age 70) called my husband tonight saying she had fallen out of bed & was unable to get herself up. He went over and found her in her feces & vomit. She had also urinated in the house. Is it common to lose control of body functions? She has not had gem/cis chemo since mid-January, and that was only one treatment, not of full strength, so it’s not a chemo side-effect. I called & spoke with the covering ONCO and the covering GI who both said she needs to go to the ER. I am home with strep throat and feel so helpless right now. I am the contact person for all the doctor’s.
We’ve been so encouraged lately. Bilirubin, which was 20 when she was diagnosed, has gone down with the help of 2 stents, and has held at 1.4 for the past 3 weeks. She’s due to have the stents changed Thursday. My husband said there is no jaundice, so that’s a good thing.
She’s scheduled for a PET and triphasic liver scan on 2/20 in the hopes of putting in the SIRspheres. Now this…….
The GI dr is concerned there is neurologic involvement now. I hope they do the PET scan so we can see if it’s gone anywhere.
Sorry to be babbling but I feel as if this is the only place I can turn. Thank you everyone. {hugs}
