Lainy,
Mom used the fentanyl patches at the end of her illness and they were great.
I assist with bone marrow procedures here in the hospital and we use a combination of fenanyl and versed during the procedure. The fentanyl works great!
Mom was kept very comfortable using the patch. I hope it works as well for Teddy.
Stay strong!
Hugs to you both!

I have seen fentanyl patches work well in patients. Just a note that sometimes it can take a few days to for someone to get used to the patch. So Teddy might be more sleepy for a day or two until he gets used to the new medication. So try and give it a few days to see how is body adjusts to the patch. I hope that it brings both him and you more comfort. Good luck!
ShariNovember 30, 2010 at 1:33 am #44840magicSpectatorHi,there,now the fentanyl is a synthetic opoid,by injection it is straight into the bloodstream and works very quickly but is shortlived so its great for imediate post op pain. The patch is slow release so works like the enteric coated morphine tablets. It causes less constipation than morphine but can cause nausea.Morphine might still be needed for breakthrough doses.
Being a patch on the skin though can create problems,it is absorbed through fat so if there is not much fat it can be uneven delivery and temps and sweating can cause problems.I t is worth trying to see if these nightmares and things ease up JanetNovember 30, 2010 at 12:09 am #44839gavinModeratorHi Lainy,
My dad never had the fentanyl patch, but just want to say that I so hope that it works better than the morphine and that it helps with the nightmares as well.
Hugs,
Gavin

Jim was given the patch when we were planning on him coming home with hospice care. He also continued to receive morphine when needed. It did seem to work well and he was less agitated those last few days. I hope this helps Teddy, too and as you said, it would make this easier on you also.
Love & Hugs,
DarlaNovember 29, 2010 at 9:24 pm #44837betsySpectatorHi Lainy,
I get that medication every time I’m in the hospital. It works very well for pain but it is short-acting.
betsyNovember 29, 2010 at 8:52 pm #44836pamSpectatorMy dad used the patch. The first Hospice service we used prescribed it. It was great as we changed it every 72 hours. He used morphine for breakthrough pain. He didn’t have any side effects from it and it really helped with the pain. The second Hospice service said they wouldn’t have used the patch if we had gone with their service first. The only reason the nurse could give is when patients run high fevers the patch has to come off because patients can get too much in their systems too fast. That didn’t happen with my dad because he only ran low grade fevers at the end. So some Hospices prescribe it some don’t. Hope this helps.
November 29, 2010 at 7:59 pm #44835lainySpectatorMmm, Nurse said Morphine was the Gold Star of pain meds. That is what was making me nervous but I loooked up in our ‘seach’ engine and there were only good things said about Fentyenol. I would likek the patch otherwise I have to wake up every 4 hours during the night to givie him the dose. Thank-you for the quick response. Love to you and your family as well!
November 29, 2010 at 7:53 pm #44834jennifersMemberI do know a bit about it, although Dad hasn’t been on it yet (wondering if that’s what they will put him on next). Fentanyl is WAY stronger then morphine, and it’s quick release and short-acting, so I imagine it would be for break-through pain? I hope it helps with the nightmares, and the pain… I know Dad has that type of reaction to morphine (nightmares, hallucinations)…
Love to you and Teddy.
Jen
November 29, 2010 at 7:22 pm #4392lainySpectatorThe Hospice Nurse is coming within an hour and it’s 1230PM PHX time.
She is thinking of switching Teddy to Fentynol every 4 hours and we think the Morphine is giving him the nightmares, muscle spasms and talking 7*24. I am worried about the pain. Anyone out there been on the Fentynol? -
