Ashley….we have several postings re: chemoembolization hidden in our google function. (Top, right, enter: chemoembolization.) You might want to read up on it until others have a chance to respond to you.
Re: the comment about buying time….there is not limit set. As our Kris had mentioned frequently: there is no expiration stamp and we stay optimistic and realistic.
All my best wishes,
MarionJanuary 7, 2011 at 10:27 pm #46358ashleycSpectatorUpdate on Mom:
I talked to dad this afternoon and they are not performing the Cyberknife as planned. They have decided that chemoembolization is the best route to go. Has anyone had this performed? She will go at the end of the month to have it done on the left lobe and I believe 2 weeks later, the right lobe. From what I read, it seems to be a good path to take. Dad did inform me that the doctor said it would just “buy us time.” Not what I wanted to hear.

January 7, 2011 at 7:09 pm #46356marionsModeratorAshley….good luck on today’s visit. I also wanted to share with you the following: Cyberknife is one of several radiation treatments called: Selective Internal Radiation.
Other manufacturers also offer this type of radiation such as, Axesse, Gamma Knife, Novalis, Primatom, Synergy, X-Knife, TomoTherapy and Trilogy, to name a few.
Radiation must pass through skin or other organs. These particular machines offer a shaped radiaton beam therfore, it provides larger doses of radiation to the tumor itself rather, than the surrounding tissue.
This link will lead you to the cyberknife site:

I hope this helped.
All my best wishes,
MarionJanuary 7, 2011 at 4:00 pm #46355lainySpectatorHi Ashley, yes Teddy had Cyberknife. It is miraculous. The tumor must be under 7cm. They implant 4 gold rods, very teeny tiny, patient is in a twilight sleep. Then you come back for possibly 3 sessions in a row and you are done. You jut lay there and it is a lot like having radiation except it is not damaging to anything around it. You can google Cyberknife and learn all about it. Very interesting. Much good luck.
January 7, 2011 at 3:11 pm #46354ashleycSpectatorThank you all so much for your kind words. Mom has been on Cisplatin/Gemzar since August. She goes to chemo for 2 weeks and then off one week. I spoke to her yesterday and they (mom and dad) were on their way to Dallas, a 5 hour drive to see the surgeon. We didn’t know the appointment would be so quick as she had just found Wednesday that it was even a possibility. However, we assumed that when they said surgery that it would be a possible liver resection. She will see a doctor today that performs the cyberknife procedure. I have only read about this. Does anyone have any experience with this, did it help, what’s the next step afterwards?
I have told mom about the wonderful support group of people here and she was just thrilled. I hate that the one thing that we all have in common is this horrendous disease, but I am amazed at the love, support, compassion that people here have for one another. I hope that you all have a good Friday and a relaxing weekend!

January 6, 2011 at 3:18 pm #46350chezwrightaol-comSpectatorI had surgery 29 th Sept…removed 2/3 of liver, gallbladder, bile ducts (which he reconstructed). I’m due to have my first CT Scan on Jan. 24th. Other than my incision which has had trouble healing in one section, I’ve been progressing well..just tired…Of course, every slight thing is a worry..I’ve had itching skin the past several days which was about my only symptom before so this is making me nervous!
Good luck on your mother’s surgery! I had a fabulous surgeon at Johns Hopkins to whom i owe my life.
Keep us posted.

January 5, 2011 at 9:46 pm #46348marionsModeratorAshley….fantastic news. We have seen both: removal of complete tumor or, at times, cases in where cytoreduction surgery (also called: debulking) has had great results. You might want ask some of these questions. But, anyway you look at it, the news is fantastic.
Best wishes,
