GI Doc is the one who set up the EUS and ERCP second opinion at UC Irvine. I have talked to an Oncology Surgeon here in Reno who has done 40 Whipples (27 in the last year) as well as numerous other biliary surgeries. He feels a 50-50 chance I will need surgery but will await the outcome of the second EUS/ERCP. I still have some slight abdominal nausea occasionally during the day.
Tests do not show a problem in my pancreas nor liver. When I hd the MRCP it listed Liver-within normal limits. No masses visualized.
Gallbladder-within normal limits.
Bile Ducts- No intrahepatic or extrahepatic biliary duct dilation. No evidence of colonic obstruction.
Pancreas- no gross pancreatic mass. No pancreatic duct dilation.
Spleen- slightly enlarged.
The ERCP Biopsy lists:
Distal biliary duct core biopsy- Fragments of benign pancreatic parenchyma showing mild acute inflammation and fragments of benign columnar epithelium infiltrated by neutrophjils.
Distal biliary duct-Fragments of benign columnar epithelium infiltrated by neutrophils.
Gastric biopsy-Normal appearing gastric mucosa. A few A typical cells not sure reactive or neoplastic.April 24, 2012 at 10:04 pm #60120lainySpectatorFlyboy, sounds like you really have some good Doctors. No suggestions yet. Sometimes CC is just very hard to detect. The only thing we know for sure about CC is that we know not much. Waiting is the hardest part because you feel so helpless but when a DX is given you feel relief either way as a game plan is then set in place and the fright turns to fight. What do the Docs suggest next? Remember if you do not feel right about it get another opinion, we are big believers in that and Doctors understand. Listen to your gut as it is usually right.
April 24, 2012 at 9:17 pm #60119flyboyMemberThanks so much for the replies. I am 65 and had really bad abdominal pain. went to ER and they did Ultrasound. Became Jaundiced and my Bilirubin went to 22 (normally around 4 because I have hereditary Gilbert disease) and liver enzymes were high. Had a HIDA scan and Gall Bladder was not functioning normally. Have had CT, MRCP, etc. Everything shows normal but Drs are suspicious. Have had CA 19-9 tumor marker blood work which is normal. 4 phase liver CT which does not show tumor. Dr suspect cancer in my Gall Bladder and bile duct so I am going for another EUS and ERCP.
Just got blood work back today. Bilirubin is 4.1 (pretty normal for me) and liver enzymes are in the normal range.
Any suggestions?
April 24, 2012 at 2:48 pm #60118lainySpectatorDear Flyboy, welcome to our extraordinary family but sorry you had to find us. I heartily agree with Percy and while I am not versed in all the newer tests my husband did have a Whipple 7 years ago at the age of 73 and it did give him a pretty good 5 1/2 years. I would also suggest you read up as much as you can as knowledge is powerful when fighting CC. When grazing our site, there is a search button at the top and if you type in a word like bile duct, many posts will appear on the subject. You are not alone in this and feel free to ask questions and please keep us posted on your test results.

UCSanFran is the place for west coast of the disease.EUS,ERCP may not be as good as MRCP to show the narrowing of the bile duct(stricture).
CTscan or MRI(you can do both MRI and MRCP the same time) and PET scan of “the chest, abdomen and pelvis” are some of the scan for determining the status of the findings.(to learn more scans,go to experience forum under” radiation and options” .)
Atypical cells means you have cells that are abnormal in the area of investigation, and may or may not become cancerous in the future.
Please take a look on our web site under the” hospital and physicans” experiense forum to fine more choice.
May I ask how old you are and your health in general? and what symptom prompted you to seek medical help and come to our web site for info.?
it will help me innhe future to answer your question.
God bless.April 24, 2012 at 7:09 am #6702flyboyMemberMy name is Steve and I am currently going through EUS and ERCP testing for suspected Gall Bladder cancer and Cholangiocarcinoma in my bile duct. The previous biopsies were benign with a few A Typical cells. I am going to UC Irvine on Thursday (4/26) for another scope. The Drs are suspicious that I do have cancer but it hasn’t been proven yet. One of my options may be to have the Whipple procedure. Can anyone give me advice and maybe a recommendation for Dr/Hospital on the west coast to have this done if necessary. I live in Reno, NV.
Thanks so much.
