Thank you all for providing me with such warm and positive feedback! This site is a wonderful thing for us CC patients. I’m hoping I will tolerate the forthcoming gem/cis combo reasonably well; some of the posts about that topic have been encouraging.
May 3, 2011 at 8:52 pm #50073marionsModeratorHi Phillip….a warm welcome from me also. Thanks for allowing us to share the pictures of your lovely family. Phillip, as the others have mentioned staying positive and vigilant are the two most important things you can do. We are behind you….one hundred percent.
Thanks for joining our site and all my best wishes,

Thanks for sharing the photos…..you have a lovely family. I’ve had a successful whipples in May 2010 and like you I recovered quickly and got back to work last August. I’ve had some blood tests lately and I expect the results shortly – the truth be told, I’m a bit apprehensive. Like you, there are days I think of a recurrence but I’ve come to accept that it is all part of the fight against cancer so I wait for the negative thoughts to pass and get back living again.Take care……..Gerry

Welcome to the site that as everyone says you hate to have to visit! First your photos are beautiful. What a wonderful family. Second, congratulations on the “whipple” being a success. As the wife (caregiver) of a wonderful man who was unable to have surgery … I consider this a “miracle”. Please don’t dwell on what could come, enjoy your health as it gets better each day. As you face each hurdle, you will find it gets easier. Don’t let this awful disease dictate how you live your life. Face each hurdle, jump it and go on living and enjoying your family with a new appreciation of how truly amazing leach day, each season and each year can be. I pray your recovery will be swift.

P.S. My husband Herb and I are in Calgary as well.May 1, 2011 at 9:32 pm #50070gavinModeratorHi Philip,
Welcome to the site. Sorry that you had to find us all but I’m glad that you have joined in with us here. And no apologies are needed by you for a lengthy introduction at all! I am glad that you have came here as you will get so much support from the members here. I came here back in 2008 when my dad was diagnosed with inoperable CC and everyone helped me so much, and I know that they will do the same for you.
Thanks also for sharing your story with us. You sure have been througfh so much with the surgery and I am glad that you were able to have the surgery. And from what you have said, it sounds like you have made a very speedy recovery from this and I hope this continues. As Lainy has mentioned to you, so many of our members here have been through the Gem/Cis combo and they have shared a lot about their experiences on the chemo board that we have here on the site. It can be found here –

Thanks also for sharing the photos of your family with us, I liked them very much. Feel free to ask any questions that you have and we will all do what we can to help in answering them. I look forward to reading more of your posts.
My best wishes to you,
Gavin
May 1, 2011 at 8:08 pm #50069lainySpectatorHi Phil and thanks for the photos. What a beautiful family you have. As a Grandma, I would gladly take Jordan and Elliot and give you a break!
Wow, and your Dad starting a business. He looks sprite enough to make it monkey business. LOL Just kidding. You will find I have a strange sense of humor. Like I said you have a whole cure in that family of yours.May 1, 2011 at 7:12 pm #50068kathybMemberPhilip,
Loved looking at the pictures of your beautiful family. Thanks for sharing.
Whenever the doubts and fears come to mind, reread Bob’s reply to you. Print it out so you can have it handy.
I’m in a different place than you are as I was inoperable and given 3 -14 months max. It’s now been 21 months and I feel fine. My doctors are amazed I’m still around and doing great. Just goes to prove statistics maybe don’t apply to us.
Take care.
God blessKathy
May 1, 2011 at 6:16 pm #50067philipMemberThank you Bob and Lainy for those very thoughtful and encouraging replies! It does feel good to participate in this site and especially to receive feedback from both of you as I’ve been following both of your posts for the past few months.

May 1, 2011 at 4:30 pm #5006532coupeSpectatorHi Phillip,
I agree with Lainy (usually do…). I am in the process of recovering for a second time from surgery done 14 years ago and redone 4 weeks ago. Like you, when the doc tells me I am doing so great I wonder than why do I feel so bad. Now that you are feeling good, don’t give it away by wondering about what you can’t control. You have no control over a recurrance – but you do control how you choose to live your life. You clearly have MUCH do be grateful for and that is where you need to focus. By the way, I have been cancer free for 14 years and I live one day at a time grateful for each day.God Bless and prayers coming your way,
bob
May 1, 2011 at 2:18 pm #50064lainySpectatorDear Philip, welcome to our wonderful family and CONGRATULATIONS on already being a survivor! My husband had a “Whipple” surgery and it is not uncommon for those ‘nasty’ infections and also for the surgery sites to have the
openings which do take some time to heal. You have really done quit well. One of the biggest hurdles to jump is the thought of recurrence. I know this may sound silly to you but we can get to that point by telling ourselves that no one is born with an expiration date. That we have members who were given dire prognosis and they have survived way beyond that. That we think with realistic optimisim. That we feel thankful to be here and expect to be here for a long time. What you have already been through was probably much worse than the Chemo as many go through the chemo with very little or no reaction except tiredness. Then after you absorb all the above…….just concentrate on those 2 little children and they will be the best perscription you could ever have. Continued good luck to you and please keep us posted.May 1, 2011 at 9:06 am #5083philipMemberHere
