Sandi,
That was not my situation, as my husband’s cancer was way too advanced and he was too compromised by the time it was diagnosised, but I have seen this before on the site and often felt it should be the patient’s choice to take that chance or not knowing all the risks involved, not the doctor’s. Any thought’s on this Marion or any one else?

December 8, 2009 at 7:20 am #33588luluuSpectatorHi Toni, So sorry about your Mom, I hate to hear this from others. I don’t know why these doctors don’t finish what they started even though it is in another location. If it was small enough not to show up on scans, then maybe there is hope that chemo will work after the resection.
I know the reason they say why they abort the surgery,— because it’s in another organ, it’s risky (yeah, like cancer is not risky)…however if they would have completed the whipple on my husband, he could still be here.
8 months after the aborted whipple, he still never got cancer in the liver despite the fact that the spots were checked at the time of surgery.
I think something has to change, I mean “standard of care” if that’s the right term, why not continue with the surgery and then treat the body systemically.
I heard all the reasons from several doctors but I don’t think that’s in the best interest of the patient, I think it’s in the best interest of the surgeon.Marion, our CC expert, how can we stop these doctors from making these decisions for the patients…it should be the patients decision.
My husband wanted to take his change with surgery, no matter what. They cut him open for nothing.Sandi

We live in the Tampa Bay area. I feel more comfortable having her go to Sloan-Mt. Sinai but its her decision. Im just trying to find her the best down here. Thanks

Sorry – I was mistaken, I thought you were in NY. The Mayo at Jacksonville comes to mind first but there are others on this board who are familiar with doctors on the west coast of Florida as well. I think you can do a search on this board and find a listing??
Good luckDecember 7, 2009 at 4:38 pm #33584devoncatSpectatorToniann,
Sorry your mother experienced an unsuccessful resection. Unfortunately it is not uncommon.
I am unfamiliar with doctors in Florida, hopefully someone will be around shortly to give you some names. We do have several members there whose names have completely escaped me now. I just wanted to welcome you to the site and offer my positive thoughts for your mothers chemo regime.

December 7, 2009 at 4:32 pm #2973tstewart4128MemberHi Everyone
My mom is currently in NY where she had an unsuccessful surgery. Once the doctor went in, he saw tiny spots on the top of her liver and could not do the surgery. He said chemo is her only option at this point. She has an in at Sloan in NYC but unfortunatly she lives in FLorida and wants to have her treatments down there.
Does anyone know of any doctors or hospitals in Flordia that have dealt with this type of cancer and what has been your experience. I would rather her stay in NY for this, but you cant force her to stay if she doesnt want to. Going to keep trying to have her stay there but just in case I wanted to have some doctors lined up here for her.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks
Toniann
