    Hi Susie,

Many thanks for that. Like Eli says, you learn something every day! Can’t recall my dad ever having that but he could of in the hospital when I wasn’t there. But it never happened when I was with him, the docs always used their hands to check liver, area etc. Thanks again for that.

    Best wishes,

    Gavin

You learn something new every day. Today I learned why oncologists use stethoscopes. I always found it odd when they examined my wife with a stethoscope.

    Thanks, Susie.

    Hi,
Sorry, don’t know about this and my oncologist never try to use the stethoscope on my liver. Only use his hands to check my liver for pain or bumps.
    God bless.

Thanks, Susie. Next time I have the Carotids checked I will ask the tech how my Bruits are. See, one can learn somthing each day! I know I heard an orchestra of sounds but can’t remember him using a stethoscope. Oh, well, its one thing that is working good yet!

    it’s a specific sound you hear through a stethoscope…

I looked up the definition of a bruit:

an abnormal blowing or swishing sound or murmur heard while auscultating a carotid artery, the aorta, an organ, or a gland, such as the liver or thyroid, and resulting from blood flowing through a narrow or partially occluded artery. The specific character of the bruit, its location, and the time of its occurrence in a cycle of other sounds are all of diagnostic importance. Bruits are usually of low frequency and are heard best with the bell of a stethoscope.

Liver tumors tend be very vascular, so many have bruits.

I remember on my preop imaging report, it said my tumor had “recruited a large blood supply” Dirty bugger.

Susie, for all us non medical folks what is a hepatic bruit?

Question for all you medical folks. Does anyone have a hepatic bruit over their tumor? I’ve read it is a pretty common finding in liver cancer.
I am a nurse but I never thought to listen to my own liver when I had the tumor.
Now that it has been removed, I use my stethoscope on occasion, but never hear anything significant.
Just curious. I know I’m not the only crazy nurse who auscultates my own abdomen.

    Hope everyone is well.

    Susie
