    Theresa:

Tom is done with chemo / radiation for the time being. Now we are in a holding pattern and the doc will be watching his numbers. I agree with one of the other responses also, dairy products, cottage cheese, whole milk, cheese, etc would be good as well as they supply a lot of protein.

My mom has started her coriolus versicolor a few days ago and has improved appetite as predicted by the Chinese doctor. It is supposed to help reduce the side effects of chemo and radiation too.

Theresa, I had surgery plus chemo & radiation for my CC, at MD Anderson. During that time, I had lost 25 lbs (from 145 to 120). I saw a dietician and they advised me for a diet high on protein, but also Ensure & Boost drinks. They did not specifically say to stay away from sugar. I drank lots of milk shakes and ate ice cream and cheeses, too.

    Hi Theresa,

I know that you said that you didn’t want to eat sugar and starches, but what about dairy? As I was going to suggest that maybe cream and cheese would help put on some weight. Here is a lonk I found that might be of use to you.

Margaret, thanks for your help. I seem to be eating a lot of my time, but must not be the stuff that puts the weight on. When I was diagnosed last July, my weight was 138 and now I am down to 100. Sounds like Tom and I are in the same boat. It scares me to think of starting chemo, again, for I am already skin and bones.
How is Tom feeling? I feel good and look pretty good and that is why they have put off giving me more chemo.
One thing, I need to do is to get more exercise and get some muscle strength back.
I did buy the whole grain pasta but did not like it as well, but I will get it out and start using it.
Is Tom taking any treatments right now?

Best wishes to you and Tom.

    Theresa:

My husband Tom who has CC and has been through Radiation and Chemo has lost 67 pounds and is now down to 116 lbs. There are a lot of things out there designed to help a person lose weight, but nothing to help a person gain weight.

One of Tom’s doctors told him that the only way he will be able to gain weight is to get his body more active and rebuild the muscles back up, walking, exercise cycle, etc. along with eating good healthy foods. Although some of his muscle tone has come back, to date he has not gained any weight.

One of the things that I could advise is to eat 6 smaller ‘meals’ a day rather then to eat 3 meals a day. So, Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack. That way you are keeping your belly full all day. However, if all you are eating is fruits and vegetables and whole grains you may not be able to gain weight. I would concentrate more on the Pasta’s (you can get whole grain pasta) and get more meat/fish/poultry/pork, etc in your diet. Hope this helps…but if you find anything that works better please let me know, cause I’d certainly be willing to try it for Tom.

I will be starting chemo again, and I can not afford to lose any more weight. When I had chemo and radiation, the first time, I lost 25 pounds, and since then I have lost another 10 pounds. My doctor has been telling me to eat anything and everything and not to lose any more weight. I have read that sugar and starches feed cancer so I have given up sweets and white potatoes. My diet consist mostly of fruits and vegetables and whole grains. I drank Ensure while I was on chemo, but it is full of sugar, so I stopped drinking it. Can you give me any suggestions? My doctor has suggested ice cream, but that is the sugar and the dairy products.
So, I am asking for your suggestions. I need to gain weight.

    Theresa
