    Hi Marni,

    My dad never had chemo but he did have issues with constipation. He was prescribed Lactulose and he took this first thing in the morning and last thing at night and that seemed to work for him. He did try Movicol first but that didn’t really work for him.

    Late to respond but up to 1000Mg of Magnesium (start at 250 and work up) can help too. Make sure its Mag only, not Cal-Mag.

    Thank you for your replies everyone. I will pass on your suggestions to my mom, and hopefully we’ll find a magic trick! Kristin, I will definitely call an acupuncturist here in town, and see if that might help too. Thanks for confirming that it is worth at least checking into!

    I take metamucal fiber capusles, one before each meal, says you can take up to 6 per day. But as others state the fluid intake is critical.
    Using the metamucal and lots of liquids relieved the problem for me.

    Acupuncture can help with a lot of side effects, and it’s painless (really!) I definitely think it’s worth contacting an acupunturist to discuss this. They are usually very frank about what conditions they can and can’t help. I had acupuncture for the side effects of radiation and it was a tremendous help to me.

    Hi Everyone,

    My mom is currently doing gemzar/cisplatin chemo treatments, plus taking pain meds, and as a result is experiencing severe constipation. We are at our wits ends, because she has tried several things (Miralax, etc.) and doesn’t seem to have much success getting relief.

    Has anyone experienced this same issue, and found something other than the typical remedies that has worked for them? I was even wondering if something like acupuncture is known to be beneficial?

    Thanks for sharing any knowledge you might have!
