In the Civil War, a common imagery of death and afterlife was that of “crossing the river”. Stonewall Jackson’s last words were, “Let us go across the river and rest beneath the shade of the trees”.
I think that is a touching sentiment.
January 29, 2011 at 3:29 pm #47233darlaSpectatorYou may not realize it, but you are stronger than you think. I think you are handling things in the best way that you can. You are doing all you can do for your mom and I am sure she knows that and is very proud of you. Don’t forget to take care of yourself, too.

I am married and have two beautiful children so I want/need to be at home, but also want to be here with mom. Again, I’m left googling signs and symptoms of approaching death…… I really just need to be cloned! As soon as they find a cure for CC then I hope they can clone people for short periods of time. hahahaha
I think that your right when you say that we are trying to protect our hearts…..I wish that I could be as strong as my mom. She is definately my hero!!!January 29, 2011 at 1:00 pm #47231darlaSpectatorYes, it seems that shaking is a common symptom. Nothing about this disease is easy and I am sorry you and your family are dealing with all of this. As for her wanting to touch the sky, could be a reference to The Kanye West song Touch The Sky. “For the day I die I’mma touch the sky.” Yes it may be symbolic of what she is thinking and feeling.

DarlaJanuary 29, 2011 at 12:00 pm #47230pamSpectatorBless your heart. I’m so sorry your mom is in such a rough place. My dad had weakness and shakiness the last few weeks or so of his life. It didn’t stop him from trying to drink his coffee, though. I’d lift the bottom of the cup for him. He also had secretions and we had medication for those too. In the end, he was in a very peaceful sleep induced coma. We had to crush medication and give it to him with drops of water. ( some medication does not come in liquid). You will have the strength to love and take care of her to the end. What a great daughter you are. The song is probably a symbol that she is getting ready to go. Thoughts and prayers to your mom, you, and your family.

Sorry about the shaking. That has to be tough for her.
January 29, 2011 at 5:03 am #47228slittle1127MemberMy husband is shaky and has been for a long time. His lungs are clear, but he has begun having the secretions in his throat. It leads to the death rattle but hospice has provided medications to dry the secretions. I never will understand why we need to know “when” but I think it is because we don’t want to be taken by surprise. Our brains work so hard to convince us that each step is a new type of normal. But the truth is that our brains are trying to protect us and our hearts. I just pray that your mom will have tremendous peace before she touches the sky.
January 29, 2011 at 4:19 am #47227marionsModeratorelcomks….My husband experienced extreme shaking toward the end of his life. There are numerous reasons causing the shakiness, but all of his symptom were related to the physiological changes in his body.
My heart is with you,
MarionJanuary 29, 2011 at 3:50 am #47226lainySpectatorHi Elmoks. Teddy got a tad shakey but couldn’t that also be from the Meds? I honestly think this is the worst part, all that they have to go through to get to their peace. Man, this CC sure makes different people out of us, doesn’t it? Is Mom still eating fairly well? Does she sleep a lot? How is her pain. You are doing amazingly well and should be as proud of yourself as I am sure your Mom is. Best wishes.
January 29, 2011 at 3:26 am #4685elmoksMemberI just wanted to drop in and give an update on my mom. She still continues to be the ROCK-STAR that she’s always been.
However, today has been a very bad day for her. She is SO shaky…. and not just her hands, her whole body. The hospice nurse said it was the progression of the disease. I keep reading the “book” so that I know what to watch for, and then BAM, there is a new sign that’s not in the book. My sister and I have googled and googled everything we can think of so that we know what to watch for and be prepared for. But, I wonder, are you ever really prepared? And, why is it so important to me to know when it will be her “time to touch the sky.” Today, she kept saying that……. she said it was a song. But, again, we googled it and can’t seem to find that song. I wonder if it’s symbolic for something? Hmmmm… Mom is still retaining alot of fluid. The lasik/diuretic cocktail I guess are working…. but obviously not good enough. Darn it. The nurse said that her lungs are still clear, so that’s a GREAT sign, right?! )) -
