    Julie….great observation. The question then is for patients treated in another State to investigate legal adaptability of their Home State’s directive. Please let us know what you find out.

    Marion, Thank you for posting this. My hubby and I have had advance directives in place for years, but it never crossed my mind that they would possibly not be accepted in another state. I’m in Iowa….and Mayo Clinic downloaded my directive into their data base, but I don’t know if they looked at it. I am going to check into that when I go up to Mayo next time to are sure there are no problems with the directive on file between states.

    Filling out advance directives gives people control over their health care.
    Each state has its own laws regarding advance directives. Therefore, special care should be taken to follow the laws of the state where you live or are being treated. A living will or medical power of attorney that is accepted in one state may not be accepted in another state.
