Yes, minnie….a roller coaster ride it is. Will Humana cover also cover you in California? If so then you would still be able to go there for the winter, right?
Best wishes,
MarionOctober 31, 2010 at 12:13 am #43441minnie305SpectatorThanks everyone for your input. To answer a couple of your questions, they culture him every time each day that he is in the hospital. The oral antibiotics no longer work on him so he has to have the IV antibiotics now. Our current insurance pays for home health care but not for the antibiotics to be delivered to our home. We are starting up with Humana next week and they do cover that so for a few days, I will drive him to the hospital every day for the meds, starting tomorrow, and then hopefully when we get the new insurance cards, we can get it sent to our home. Boy this really is evil. Seems every day there is some new twist. Minnie

I’m so sorry that Karl is having to go through this cycle of infections. I know it can be frustrating and discouraging. For the last year when I had a stent/ tube to deal with a biliary blockage, I too had countless infections, many of them leading to hospital stays (I believe eleven times). At one point, the infectious disease Doc. suggested that a possible solution could be for me to be taking oral antibiotics daily as a preventative. The plan was to alternate between a few different meds so the ‘bugs’ couldn’t mutate and become resistant. You might ask if this has been considered so you and Karl can be more mobile. I’m sure winter in sunny CA with family would do Karl much good. Blessings and prayers to you…bob
October 30, 2010 at 3:45 pm #43439sunshinecaregiverMemberIt irks me that insurance + Medicare will not pay for home health care unless there is a medical reason for a nursing visit. I would love to have a visit from homehealth caregive once per week or even biweekly to verify we are still doing good work. I have gotten aggrevated and frustrated by the “savings” I am giving to the company because I want to keep Mom at home and happy. I could place her in a nursing home and deplete my funds before they would start paying, so tell me, what am I pay them for? I presently take her to Dr visits and it is not easy getting her in and out of offices with our car. I take care of meals and medications, ect. We pay big bucks for her insurance and it will pay for hospital care and portions on her medication and that is it.
October 30, 2010 at 1:02 pm #43438lainySpectatorMargaret, as long as you are talking ‘general’ infections here are a couple of things I do: Once a week I wipe all TV Remotes and phones. And the biggie:
When I am out anywhere and I have to sign something, I use my own pen. Always.
Minnie I too thought Insurance pays for Home Health IF the patient goes on it when he is leaving the hospital. Like it will not pay for rehab unless ordered from the hospital. But you would do best to hear about it from your Insurance company. And, Teddy also had infections and they always had to be cultured.October 30, 2010 at 12:30 pm #43437mlepp0416SpectatorMinnie, infections seem to be a way of life with CC. My husband Tom has been hospitalized twice with severe infections during the past almost three years, one of which I was certain that we were going to lose him. However, with good antibotics he has always ‘pulled through’. Now they have him on Levequin which he takes every other day just to ward off infections.
Since he has an external drain tube, I am super careful when flushing the tube and changing the bandage because with the open wound and the tube going directly into his liver….well you get the picture.. Gloves, antiseptic, alcohol wipes, etc.
I don’t know that I would put my life on hold due to infections, CA has good hospitals and doctors as well. Just check with insurance to make sure that hospitals and docs in CA are in network and he then would want to hook up with a specialist in CA. He can have his records transferred out to CA for the time that you would be there. And when you come back home had any ‘new’ records transferred back so his doc’s back home know what transpired during the time he was gone.
I just re-read your post and am not so sure about what his doc said about the cancer causing the infection? I don’t believe that cancer can cause an infection.
1) Wash hand after using the bathroom…..many infections are caused by bacteria from your hands.
2) Sanatize, door handles, facuet handles, cupboard handles, Flush handle on toilets, etc. Lysol wipes work great for that
3) Get hand sanitizer and everyone coming into the home MUST sanatize their hands!
4) Clean, clean, clean the house, toilet, all surfaces in the house 1 to 2 times weekly. You would be amazed at how many germs are lurking around the house just waiting for a chance to go cause havoc on someone who has a supressed immune system.
5) If your hubby has a favorite chair that he always sits in, spray it with Lysol spray at least 1 -2 times a weekThese are the things that we do in our household to help ward off infections for Tom.
Most people can fight off those nasty little germs, but a person with CC cannot combat them cause their body is already working to try and fight off the CC.You also stated that your insurance would not pay for home health care? I work for a health insurance company and that does not seem right. Have you called our insurance company and questioned that? Home health care is a lot cheaper than being hospitalized. I would double check that.
In any case, your hubby has prayers coming his way from Wisconsin.
Go with God and KEEP KICKIN’ THAT cancer.

October 30, 2010 at 4:43 am #43436marionsModeratorminnie….I suppose that the bacteria has been cultured. Also I am wondering whether there is a possibility for Karl to be on oral antibiotics for the duration of the stay in California?
Best wishes,
MarionOctober 30, 2010 at 2:18 am #4231minnie305SpectatorKarl has had so many infections lately and has been in and out of the hospital…twice just this week. We were all set to go south for the winter to CA on Monday and now we have to cancel all that. Now he has to go every day for 6 weeks for IV antibotiocs to the hospital. Our insurance won’t pay for the home health care. So on and on it goes. Does anyone out there have the same infection problems? The doctor today told me today that the infection is caused by the cancer and not the stints.
