Hi Jim, I too am sorry to hear about your friend. My Dad was in the same position and resection was not an option – said 9 out of 10 docs.- because of proximity of the mass to the portal. Chemo and radiation are other standard-potential options and as Marion has indicated multiple opinions are always a good idea.

Wishes for strength coming to you and your friend.

Hello Jim. I am sorry to hear about your friend. Unfortunately, what you are describing is not uncommon and has been reported on this board, many times. In fact, if you want to look up previous comments regarding portal vein infiltration of this cancer then you might find the search function helpful, on top of the page. The physicians at Sloan Kettering are quite familiar with this cancer as many of our members have been treated there. Nevertheless, it would not hurt to consult other doctors. I am a strong believer in second or third opinions and certainly, when a treatment plan is being proposed. Other members on this site had encountered similar situations in that a resection was not achievable. Hopefully, you will receive some personal responses. My best wishes to your friend and please, continue to ask any questions. Your will receive tons of support.

Hi, my name is Jim and a real good friend of mine just went in for resection surgery, but they couldn’t do the resection since the portal vien had fused with the common bile duct. Tumor is in the common bile duct area.

Is anyone else familar with this situation ? Any information on possible next steps. The treating hospital is Sloan Kettering.

Sorry if this is not the right area to ask this question for more information, I am just trying to see if there are some other options.

    Thanks for your help.

    Jim
