Lee…….are the symptoms occurring after meal intake or is it constant? Definitely, I would contact the physician. Please keep us informed.

Thank you so much, Gavin and Marion!! My husband was fever free for more than 24 hours and felt better. His blood culture (48 hours) was negative so he was discharged today with PO antibiotics. However, he has been having bloating, abdominal distention/discomfort since the stent placement. He has not been able to sleep well due to these symptoms. He has tried various medications (e.g. Gas-X, Prilosec, etc.), but they did not seem helping. Could this be due to Jaundice? I wonder if anyone has experience with this. Thanks!

Lee….specialists disagree (as you see) and it can leave us confused. Stents and cholangitis – there can be a connection and I would want to make sure that it is ruled out. This link will be of interest to you:

Please make sure to print out the card and have it on hand at all times. This is especially important when traveling.

    Hi Lee,

Thanks for letting us know about your husband and I am very happy to hear that your husband has had a great response to the meds. You so did the right thing in getting him to the hospital asap and I hope that the team can get to the bottom of the cause of the problems. Hoping that he gets home real soon and please let us know how things go.

My best wishes to you both,

    Gavin

Thank you, Marion! The abdominal CT showed the stents are in place without dilation of bile duct. So the gastroenterologist who put in the stents did not think it was caused by clog of the stents. However, our onc thinks he had mild cholangitis since he had no signs for any other infection that can explain the source of fever. We are confused…..

Lee….happy to hear of your husband’s great response to the antibiotics and hope he can be released tomorrow. Do you know what had caused him to have the infection? Generally (not always) it is related to the stents, as they clog with debris, but it appears that in his case there was another cause.
    Wishing for continued good news.
    Hugs,
    Marion

I wanted to update on my husband’s status. After 2 stents were placed on April 10 (his 54th birthday), total bilirubin came down some and has continued to trend down over the last 2 weeks. However, he developed fever 2 days ago. We came to the ER at 2am in the morning. They did lab workup, chest x-ray and put him on iv antibiotic. He was admitted to the hospital. The GOOD news is he has no fever for over 24 hours, and hopefully he can go home tomorrow.

    Thanks, Lainy!

The gastroenterologist did another ERCP yesterday putting two stents this time. I am praying both are working so he can get his treatment next week! My husband did not receive treatment last week due to elevated level of bilirubin.

Lee, not sure about that one. I don’t recall Teddy being checked that fast for bilie. Guess I was waiting to see the yellow go down.

    Dear Lainy and Gavin,

Thanks for your positive note. We hope we will have good news from the CT today. However, his total bilirubin was not decreasing after the stent placement. it was 8.4 two days ago before the stent, but it was 8.2 this morning. I am wondering if anyone has experience with this. How soon total bilirubin should go down after the stent placement?

    Dear Marion, Lainy and Gavin,

Thanks so much for sharing the information. They are very helpful!! My husband had a plastic stent put in yesterday. He felt better today. We are now trying to find the cause for the stricture in the distant bile duct near pancreas head. He will have a CT done and see his oncologist tomorrow. I pray for good results.

    Hi Lee,

My dad had a metal stent inserted and that worked wonders for him with clearing up the jaundice and getting that bile flowing again. But not only that, once it started working as it should he felt so much better very very quickly indeed. The relief he got from the dreaded itching too he said was amazing!

I hope that the stent that your husband has works just as well for him. Clogging is most certainly something to keep an eye on in case it happens and if it does there are things that can be done to unclog or change it.

My best wishes to you both,

    Gavin
