November 18, 2010 at 11:19 pm #44432highsmithMemberMy dad tool the Cholestyramine and it helped him greatly. He only took it a few weeks, but the improvement allowed him to be less irritated and sleep better.
November 18, 2010 at 10:56 pm #44431betsySpectatorI took a medication called Cholestyramine (4 gram packet 3-4x/day). It really helped me. The itching was unbearable. No amount of lotions, ointments, oatmeal baths helped at all.

November 18, 2010 at 9:48 pm #44430cherbourgSpectatorSarna was the product that worked best for my mom. I would put it on your mom’s hands and then put on a pair of cotton gloves.
please consult with her physician….itching can be worse that pain…..

PamNovember 18, 2010 at 7:44 pm #44429BazelSpectatorCodergirl,
You say mom is refusing other treatment .. but none the less you may want to have a chat with her Dr. to determine if she is a candidate for a stent. If she is, you may be able to convince mom the procedure is worth it for relief from this symptom.
Best of luck,
Bz
November 18, 2010 at 6:13 pm #44428marionsModeratorAfter application of the ointment you may need to cover her hands with gloves in order to give her some relief from the itching which can become unbearable if not dealt with. At present it appears that the bilirubin is concentrated in her extremities however, it may very well spread to other parts of her body and it will not go away. I hope that with your persistence you will find a solution to this problem. A call to the physician may still be a good idea.

MarionNovember 18, 2010 at 5:51 pm #44427codergirlSpectatorShe does not have a stent and refuses any further treatment so we are just trying to keep her as comfortable as possable. The hospise said to get a cream called restit i was unable to find that. I did find something similar that works well but she can’t have it on her hands she is afraid she will put her fingers in her eyes and the hands are the worst part.
November 18, 2010 at 5:44 pm #44426marionsModeratorCodergirl….An ERCP stent insertion relieves the patient of the itching associated with to the bilirubin build up. I can’t read from your posting whether your Mom already has a stent. Depending on your Mom’s physical state this may or may not be an option. Only her physician is in the position to make this determination. If not a candidate for this procedure, sedation most likely will need to be increased. Please, stay on top of this because, the itching will increase over time. Hopefully others will come forward with some suggestions however; you might also want to use the google search function, top page, where you will be able to retrieve many of the discussions regarding this subject. You are a caring and loving daughter and I am sure that you will be able to keep your Mom as comfortable as possible.
Best wishes,
MarionNovember 18, 2010 at 5:30 pm #44425jathy1125SpectatorCodergirl, the only thing that ever helped my itching was a another ERCP. I had iv benadryl etc… but when itching started it usually meant a clogged stent. I would check with doctor. Cathy
November 18, 2010 at 5:22 pm #44424lainySpectatorcodergirl, for itching the best cream is called Sarna and can be bought at Walgreens. We also used some ice bags and that worked well too.
November 18, 2010 at 5:18 pm #44423pamSpectatorHospice gave my dad pills to take internally that helped a lot. I don’t know the name of them. There is also a powder to dissolve in juice that might help bind bilirubin. Hope this helps. He also tried a lotion that had cloves or something like that that was added to the lotion by the pharmacy. It helped in the beginning and made the room smell great.
