Wow, Randi!! I am so proud of you. I think you will be absolutely fabulous working with cancer patients and their families. Lord knows you have had more cancer than anyone can imagine. I think it is very admirable of you to get your Masters, but we all know you are such a great gal.

It is kind of funny…the woman who is supervising me at my internship told me she is 64 and thinking of retiring at the end of the year. And here I am 57 and thinking about starting a new career!! I know she thinks I am much younger then her and I am not about to break her bubble (or my ego) by telling her I am just 7 years younger then her! :)

    …oh it’s a small picture, perhaps you aren’t getting a full appreciation of my 57 years :)

This is a year-long internship, so at the end of the year I will be an official graduate. I really want to work with people after cancer diagnosis, to help them and their families and caretakers get the most out of the time they have (which I hope is a long time!!).

I went back to school after 25 years as a software engineer. I am a very mature student :)

    Hi all,

I am currently doing my internship for my masters degree in Mental Health Counseling. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get it in the location I wanted, which was a hospital or cancer center. I am doing my internship at a Chemical Dependency agency. The good part of this is that I am working with a therapist who does DBT therapy (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy). This involves a lot of mindfulness training. Mindfulness is being aware of the moment, the thoughts and feelings you are experiencing without judgment. Sort of a way of teaching people to stop and smell the roses…let go of regrets of the past and quell anxiety for the future.

While this is being done by me at a Chemical Dependency clinic, it really does apply to those suffering anxiety or depression after a devastating diagnosis such as cancer, both for the patient and caretakers.

Here is a link to a short article that talks about how mindfulness can be used in this way.

    http://psychcentral.com/news/2012/06/12/mindfulness-therapy-combats-anxiety-depression-in-cancer-patients/40029.html

There is a lot of information out there about DBT and mindfulness and I highly recommend anyone considering therapy to get through the challenges that life has presented, to look for a DBT therapist.
