I hallucinated on morphine, too. I thought the walls were crawling with a red, muscle-like fibery substance. I had double and triple vision. Bad dreams, too. I didn’t say anything because I was afraid people would think I was nuts.
As soon as they took me off morphine it went away.
October 15, 2010 at 4:52 am #41945ironbarkMemberHi Lainy,
Morphine while it’s a good drug also has the side effects that you have discribed. Haloparidol can work well, but in some people it also has the reverse effect and can make some people even more agitated, so be aware of that too.
Ask your medical team about a narcotic skin patch or a syringe driver with a different narcotic in it. He can still be given some top up pain relief and an anti-anxiety medication like lorazapam if needed.
Poor Teddy must be very frightened, and this would be scaring you too.
A regular dose of Grandchildren’s hugs always works well for me, so I can understand why Teddy would look forward to them.
Don’t be too hard on yourself either, it’s not a bad habit, it’s advocacy. You are fighting for the best outcome for Teddy, so it’s worth it. You go girl!!
October 15, 2010 at 1:40 am #41944mlepp0416SpectatorLainy: When Tom was in the VA Hospital after his initial Liver Resection they had him on Morphine and …. he started seeing things too! Except he saw bugs, hundreds of bugs crawling all around the room! He was so serious and could not believe that I could not see them. I told him that if he had to see ‘something’ why did it have to be bugs! Why not pretty naked ladies or something.
You need to mention this to his doctor! As soon as I told the nursing staff that Tom was seeing things like bugs crawling down the walls, they immediately took him off morphine and gave him a different type of pain killer. Evidently that is a side effect of morphine. I would certainly let his doctor know, as you don’t want Teddy to do something during one of these episodes where he might end up hurting himself or hurting you! (or all the other people that are in the bedroom!)
Prayers are coming Teddy’s way! (Call his doc!!!)
Hugs,

October 15, 2010 at 12:45 am #41942walkMemberLainy,
My dad was on morphine and ativan (lorazepam). Hospice started them simultaneously. Previously, he was very agitated and wrung his hands, etc. The ativan calmed him. Good luck!

October 14, 2010 at 8:51 pm #41941gavinModeratorHi Lainy,
My dad was on Haloperidol and I think this is what Haldol is. I think he just took it once a day, at night before bed. I don’t think he had any bad reactions or anything like that to it and it seemed to work for him. He was on it at home and also when he went into hospice care, he got it through his syringe driver. Sorry I can’t be of any more help.
Hugs,
Gavin
October 14, 2010 at 8:41 pm #41940lainySpectatorHi All. They are putting T on Haldol. Anyone know anything about this. I looked it up and not too happy with what it does. But guess we can try it.
October 14, 2010 at 7:56 pm #41939jamie-dMemberLainy,
I can’t add any incite to whats going on but I can send my prayers your way for you and Teddy. I am so sorry that you both are having to go thru this. I do think that Hospice needs to be more responsive and shouldnt make you wait 2 hours to talk to someone. Call them back.. you know what they say about the squeaky wheel. Take care and God Bless,
JamieOctober 14, 2010 at 7:47 pm #41938gavinModeratorHi Lainy,
My dad never had morphine at home, he had other pain meds but he used to get very vivid and weird dreams and also sometimes nightmares. When dad was in hopsice, he was getting anxious and they started him on anti-anxiety meds and they worked a lot. And then this was changed to the syringe driver where he was getting his pain, anxiety and nausea meds constantly over a 24 hour cycle, and again, that helped him a lot.
I am sorry to hear that Teddy ia havng these nightmares and the anxiety and hopefully the hospice care team will be able to sort this out very quickly. Have you heard back from them yet? Please keep us all up to date and I am thinking of you both a load.
Hugs to you both,
Gavin
October 14, 2010 at 7:34 pm #41937darlaSpectatorOh Lainy, I don’t think that is a fault, but if it is the worst one you have you are still the best. Keep calling, don’t let them ignore you! As for Teddy’s issues, Jim was on anxiety meds and also Fentenyl in the end and he seemed to rest peacefully for the most part. Although I too remember that scared look in his eyes and a tear now & again. Thinking of you both as always.
With Love & Hugs,
DarlaOctober 14, 2010 at 7:31 pm #41936valjeeMemberHi Lainey, oh dear, this sounds a problem for you & Teddy.
I also got some rather strange effects from morphine – I would think that people were standing around the bed looking at me – they weren’t! I would have very odd ‘flashes’ where I would get a sort of ‘close-up’ effect of something I was looking at, then it would switch back, also strange sound-effects.
I do hope hospice have got back to you by now & you are able to get Teddy sorted for some restful sleep. And for you also.
love Val xOctober 14, 2010 at 6:22 pm #41935lainySpectatorThanks everyone and Pam, so far he has been in Prison with CC, had a doctor and 2 nurses visit our room, was in a filthy hospital. Robin (daughter) is coming for lunch with 2 of the boys who are out of school this week and they always cheer Papa up. I am callig Hospice again as I talked to the Nurse almost 2 hours ago and she has not gotten back to me yet. I have to admit I HATE being ignored. Tell me no to everything but don’t ignore me! Now you all know one of my bad faults.
October 14, 2010 at 3:30 pm #41934cherbourgSpectatorHey Lainy,
My Mom had a terrible drug reaction bellieving we were conspiring to lock her up, that my sister was injured in an accident, that Daddy was missing, you name it! It was finally tracked down to be Dilaudid that was doing it. We switched to fentenyl and it worked like a charm.
Hospice should be able to get things back on track!
I’m sending hugs, love and lots of prayers to you and the big guy!
Pam
October 14, 2010 at 2:46 pm #41933katjaMemberAh, I’m so sorry to hear this Lainy. My dad had a terrible reaction to morphine after his Whipples (in fact they gave him narcan to reverse it) and was seeing things all over for a while. They did find something, although it was a cocktail of things, which stopped the pain (epidural didn’t work). I think he had tramadol, diplofenac and something else, maybe oxycodone, although unfortunately the best painkillers (opioids) are hallucinogenic.
Hospice might be able to suggest a painkiller to take alongside the morphine so he needs to take less morphine?
Hoping they have some suggestions.
October 14, 2010 at 2:31 pm #41932lainySpectatorHi, and thanks. I believe that will be the next step. He hates Meds but I am already explaining that this may have to happen, especially if the Morph. is working so good. I now opened the blinds and turned on the TV and he is able to drift in and out. I think he is scared now to sleep. Poor thing. He thought I was taking him to the hospital. I know, I can joke but its not funny at all to see his eyes so scared. If Hospice doesn’t come this morning I will call them this afternoon.
