    Hi Ash,

Welcome to our community, but I am sorry to hear that your mother-in-law has been diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma.

In the United States at this time, targeted treatments are mainly available to patients through clinical trials or expanded access programs from the pharmaceutical companies, as most of these drugs are still in testing and have not yet been approved for general use.  Has your mother-in-law had a test to determine if she has any of the genetic defects for which there are targeted treatments?  There is information on the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation website that explains molecular profiling (click on “Mutations Matter” after you click on the patients and caregivers page on the website.)

I looked at clinicaltrials.gov, which is an international registry of clinical trials, to see if targeted treatments are being tested in India.  I did not see any targeted treatment trials for cholangiocarcinoma, but it is possible in India that there is a national registry of trials that is more complete.

Many clinical trials, however, do not accept patients with very high bilirubin.  When I read your posting, I was wondering if asking the oncologist about the rising bilirubin might be helpful, to seek relief from the symptoms your mother-in-law is struggling with.  Sometimes our patients develop blockages in their bile ducts due to the cancer which can cause bilirubin to rise, and symptoms such as jaundice appear.  Where possible, doctors may place a stent (a tiny metal or plastic tube) in the blocked bile duct to open the blockage, and if successful, this may reduce symptoms.  I am not a medical doctor and am not qualified to offer medical advice, so this is just a suggestion of a question to ask with your mother-in-law’s doctors.

I hope this is helpful.  Please also take a look at the resources for patients and caregivers on the Foundation website.  Please send us any questions or concerns you may have.  I hope your mother-in-law finds relief from her symptoms.

    Regards, Mary

    Hi all

My mother in law who lives in Mumbai India was recently diagnosed with Cholangiocaricinoma. the consulting Oncologist says that it’s quite advanced in her case with no possible treatment. She has been on Homeopathic medicine thereafter and her Bilurubin levels had decreased from 17 to 2.0 Since there was no other option we continued with Homeopathic treatment. But recently her legs have started showing lots of swelling and redness and she is showing severe symptoms of Jaundice. We did her blood test and now her Bilurubin levels are very high showing 22 in her latest blood reports. Is it possible to have Targeted therapy in her case? Any help or guidance will be highly appreciated. Thank you

    ash
