Hi Andie,
Ah cheese on toast, I bet your dad loved that! The ward nurses used to make toast for my dad, especially after he came back from a procedure that he had been nil by mouth for hours leading up to it, but he never had cheese on toast! Great to hear that his appetite is still there!!
Was your dad discharged with any pain meds or given any advice regarding pain meds to take when he got home? When my dad first came home he was only on paracetamol 4 times a day which worked for him at first. The pain your dad may be experiencing right now could be down to his drain being removed today. Please keep us all up to date with this.
In my dads case, once they had made his diagnosis his specialist referred him immediately to Macmillan in order for him to have access to a Mac nurse. The nurse came to visit my dad on his ward for the first visit and brought the benefits form that you mention to him. She also filled it out for dad and all he had to do was sign it. This way, the form was filled out correctly first time and was fast tracked and signed by those who had to sign it.
In order for someone to get the services of a Macmillan nurse, they have to be referred by a hospital consultant, a GP or a ward sister. Since your dad has not been referred when he was in hospital, his GP could do this for him and I am certain that should your dad ask for this then his GP would have no hesitation in doing so at once. Could you and your dad go see his GP and ask for this as I am sure that he would benefit greatly from their services. I know that my dad benefited enormously from the work that his nurse did for him and I can’t speak highly enough of the work that they do for patients and their families. Here is a link that may help-

Was your dad given information regarding the district nurse services in your area? He should have been given contact information for both in and out of hours service should he need them. If he has been given this information, then please do not hesitate to use them if need be. Again, my dad had to call them quite a few times at various hours of the day and night to get them to come out to see dad for various things and they came pretty quickly each time.
I hope some of that is of use and if there is anything else I can help with then please just ask.
My best wishes to you and your dad, and I hope he enjoys more cheese on toast tonight!

No my Dad hasn’t been offered the services of a Macmillan nurse. We had a leaflet on benefits in his discharge pack which was by the Macmillan nurses, a note to his GP describing his condition and treatment. He is due to have a EUS and biopsy in 3 weeks time. Perhaps then they may introduce a Macmillan nurse.
It’s lovely to have him home but for the first time he is pain. He said this is from where they have taken his external drain out today. I hope this doesn’t last long. Though he still ate 2 rounds of cheese on toast within seconds!
April 23, 2010 at 5:44 pm #37469marionsModeratorAndi….these long hospital stays make the homecoming so much sweeter. In his familiar surroundings your Dad will thrive especially, with his favorite meals.
I am happy for you,
Best,

Hipp Hipp Hooray! After 5 weeks in the hospital, I bet your dad is gagging to get home (like that British slang there?). I know I was after 4. I am so much better now that I am home. It is much easier to feel better when you can choose what and when to eat and sleep. I know it will be the same for your dad.Counting down to step 2!

Great news indeed and I bet that your dad can’t wait to get home! Also good to hear that his stent now seems to be working again and I hope that continues. My dad spent the best part of 7 weeks in hospital with diagnosis and his PDT treatment and as soon as he got home he wanted a fish supper!!
I hope he enjoys the fattening up process!!
Best wishes to you and your dad,
Gavin

April 23, 2010 at 2:12 pm #3455andieSpectatorAfter 5 weeks in Hospital my Dad is finally coming home. After a little hiccup with his stent the doctors are now satisfied it is working well. I am going to pick him up in a few hours time as he has got to have his external drain out and lie down for an hour after that.
Our next step is to fatten him up as after being nil by mouth and eating hospital food his weight has dropped. I’m sure he will enjoy doing this as his appetite is still very strong.
Stage 2 is Chemo. Hopefully that will go ok.
