MarionApril 13, 2013 at 8:31 am #70498gavinModeratorThis is superb news about your dad, thanks for sharing with us!! So glad to hear that he should be out this weekend and I bet that he can’t wait to get home! Nothing like being home after all!
His strength will continue to increase as his recovery progresses and please remember to keep us updated on how that goers. And I look forward to reading your summary of everything as well, that will be of great use to many people too.
Best wishes to you and your dad,
Gavin
April 12, 2013 at 3:49 pm #70497rainMemberDear Rgreen
The recovery from a Whipples can appear slow. My father was in the hospital for 6 weeks however despite this long road (it took a while for his bowels to re-start working) in 6 weeks he was pretty much back to 100% and eating normally.
It was amazing to see. So I suggest that your Dad and your family give the body some time to delay with the surgery (which naturally is a big surgery) and ensure he rests enough.
I would trust the nursing staff on what he can and cannot do at this stage.
All the best
April 12, 2013 at 2:29 pm #70496rgreen50MemberMore good news! My dad should be getting out of the hospital on Sunday/Monday. Recover from the surgery was much more difficult than any of us expected. Having said that, he is nearly back to full strength and will be walking out the door on his own two feet!
I’m hoping to write up a more extensive summary of his recovery to help inform and educate others about this surgery. I may just be naive, but we had no idea how this was going to effect him and were surprised and scared at first. I know I would have appreciated a 1st/2nd hand account ahead of time so that i could better understood the recovery process.

Here’s to a successful recovery!

April 3, 2013 at 2:59 pm #70486lainySpectatorDear RGREEN50, welcome to our extraordinary family but sorry you had to find us. As Percy said, you have done the deed well by getting other opinions and ending up in such good hands. I hope for all to go smoothly and I pray for God to come through the hands of Dr. Jarnagin. Please keep us posted on your Dad’s progress as we truly care.
I also Thank you for complimenting our Board, but honestly, we get back so much more than we give. Looking forward to good news!April 3, 2013 at 1:53 pm #70485pcl1029MemberHi,
Thanks for your compliment about our website .It is a collective effort and all the members are volunteers as well.
I am glad that you pursuit more than one opinion and find the best solution for your dad. Dr. Jarnagin is one of the top liver surgeon in the New York area and your dad will be in good hands.
As you may have known already, surgery is the only possible cure for this disease.and the surgery may take around 8 hours .I hope the surgery will be uneventful and your dad will be discharged in a week or so.
God bless. -
