The recovery from a Whipples can appear slow. My father was in the hospital for 6 weeks however despite this long road (it took a while for his bowels to re-start working) in 6 weeks he was pretty much back to 100% and eating normally.
It was amazing to see. So I suggest that your Dad and your family give the body some time to delay with the surgery (which naturally is a big surgery) and ensure he rests enough.
I would trust the nursing staff on what he can and cannot do at this stage.

More good news! My dad should be getting out of the hospital on Sunday/Monday. Recover from the surgery was much more difficult than any of us expected. Having said that, he is nearly back to full strength and will be walking out the door on his own two feet!
I’m hoping to write up a more extensive summary of his recovery to help inform and educate others about this surgery. I may just be naive, but we had no idea how this was going to effect him and were surprised and scared at first. I know I would have appreciated a 1st/2nd hand account ahead of time so that i could better understood the recovery process.

Dear RGreen, YIPPEE! This is music to our ears. A new Super Hero and I am wishing for him to have a very speedy and comfortable recovery. What a good feeling it is. I can’t help it I must give another YIPPEE!
Success! My dad made it out of surgery yesterday after a long 6 hours. Dr. Jarnagin was very pleased with the surgery and we are all happy to have the first part of this journey done with.

Welcome to the site. Sorry that you had to find us all and I’m sorry to hear about your dad. But I’m glad that you’ve joined us all hear as you are in the right place for support and help which you will get loads of from everyone here.

I am glad that you pursuit more than one opinion and find the best solution for your dad. Dr. Jarnagin is one of the top liver surgeon in the New York area and your dad will be in good hands.
As you may have known already, surgery is the only possible cure for this disease.and the surgery may take around 8 hours .I hope the surgery will be uneventful and your dad will be discharged in a week or so.
