Hi Lisa, I am glad you enjoyed your stay (mostly) in Revelstoke. Your story reminds me of when we first moved here 21 years ago and rented a house for six months above the train station. Many nights we were startled awake! Needless to say when we bought our house we did not buy near the station or tracks! This town was built on the railway and actually “the last spike” was driven 125 years ago just west of Revelstoke completing the railway to join Canada from east to west. So, we are definitely a railroad town, and now a big ski resort.
I looked past at your posts and you are an inspiration! You have and are doing well! I pray for such good response for my hubby. Take care.

Hi Nancy, my daughters and I drove up through Revelstoke and kamped at the KOA near town. Unbeknownst to us, the KOA was about 100 yards from the huge railroad crossings. We didn’t get a lot of sleep that night! But the scenery was fantastic. We went up through to Banff and Jasper, then over to Edmondton and back down through the Crowsnest Pass on our way home. It was a wonderful vacation, and the last we had altogether before I got sick.

Guess what Jen? On the cover of the Province newspaper today it said that BC is pushing forward to get a family day! Gotta keep up with those Albertans! Have a good day.

Yes, I know Cassandra and her siblings – sweet girl, but it’s been years since I’ve seen her (since she moved to Revelstoke, in fact)! I hear she’s doing well though, which is wonderful to hear.
Your husband and I share a birthday! It really IS too bad that you don’t have a family day… we have always made sure to spend it the way it was meant to be spent (with family, and not just as another day off), and have made many wonderful memories over the years :)

Sorry Jen, Thanks for keeping me on track Susan, I was typing late last night. I am getting everyone figured out! I do know the Federico’s – not well but I know Crystal’s sister Cassandra well. I work at the high school and got to know her well through school and activities. My husband will also be 60 this year – May 3rd.
It is so nice that Alberta has family day – not here in BC. We have a traditional mother’s day at Martha Creek and of course that is always by Doug’s birthday, so double celebration.
I hope you get a Chinook soon Jen. Looking forward to hearing about your day at the Kananaskis!

    Hi Nancy –
We DID get the bench done… we haven’t been yet since there is so much snow, but have decided to get out there for Family Day. His idea, since we have spent family day in Kananaskis every year since we were kids… also, it’s over a month away, and a great goal for Dad to make AND meet. What will make it even more special is that February 24th is his 60th birthday, which is only a few days off… it will be amazing family time, for sure.
The family I had (ex’s family) are the Federico’s (Crystal and Lorenzo, specifically). Really wonderful people. I have lost touch with them, but that happens! :)
My little one is wonderful – brings joy to our lives every day. I’m sure you’ll get to experience the love of a grandchild soon… I am the same age as your first born!
I hope the next trip to Salmon Arm proves to be completely uneventful… it’s miserable here, snow drifts making it impossible to drive on many of even the main roads and SO cold… I hope it doesn’t last too long!

Thinking of you and your family…

    Nancy,

My husband served on an aircraft carrier off Viet Nam in the late 60’s. He did spend time on land in several of the Asian countries. It had been suggested that he injested liver flukes while there which damage the lining of the bile ducts and can cause the CC to develop. Often not presenting as a problem until 30 or 40 years later as it can be very slow growing and undiagnosised until near the end when it is already too late. He passed away at the age of 62. He had no other know causes for CC, but most of the doctors will not recognize this. So yes, it is a possibility although as Lainy said, we may never know for sure as it is very hard to prove. My husband was also very active and health until about 2 months before he passed away. It is very prevelant in those countries and very rare here.

I am glad you were able to have a great family Christmas. Please let us know how things are going. I will be hoping for the best for Doug and your family.

    Love & Hugs,
    Darla

Hi Nancy, It saddens me to see the passings on this site, especially those of the young people. They are still kids to me and it is unfair that their lives get cut short. I find some comfort in seeing how much love they were surrounded with. I hope you are finding some peace.
It seems this disease is good at attacking healthy people. My husband was an avid, skier, biker, kayaker; was a healthy weight, didn’t smoke ect. – like so many I read about. Take care.

Hi Susan, Who are the family you have/had here in Revy? I have been here 21 years; could know them. Read a couple of your posts. How are things going for you? Did you get the memorial bench up before the ground froze?
How is that little one doing? My first born turns 29 next week. Where does the time go? I have 3 children but no grandchildren yet – 2 grandpuppies whom I get to babysit along with my own Maggie at times. That keeps me out of trouble! It is supposed to be sunny and cold this week so the trip to Salmon Arm should be uneventful. Take care.

Nancy (I’m Nancy too) – My son had ulcerative colitis from age 16 and was under constant supervision by his gastrointestinal doctor. He had blood work every six months and a colonoscopy every year. He had never been to Thailand and is one of the many “young” persons to succomb to this disease. I was always shocked that it seemed to come on so fast for him. He was perfectly healthy and all his blood work and tests always came back within normal range, except for his last blood test just before he started showing symptoms (upper stomach discomfort) and then he was already Stage 4. Good luck with the chemo and keep us all posted. – Nancy

Nancy… glad the drive went okay – I am in Calgary but know Revelstoke very well (I had family that lived / still live there) and I know the road to Salmon Arm can be terrifying… especially with all the snow right now! Highway 1 has been closed between here and Revelstoke several times in the last month, and heard the avalanche risk is crazy right now.

I am thinking of you and Doug and hope the chemo is successful for him!!

The highest vertical drop in North America? And, people actually ski on this? I prefer cross country skiing but, have mustered some black runs albeit with some white knuckles.
Glad to hear that you made it back safely and that Doug has a good day..
I am sending all my best wishes for an uneventful ride next week.

    Hi Marion,
I live in the small town of Revelstoke (pop- 8000) in the mountains of British Columbia. We are getting quite well known with our newly developed 3 year old world class ski mountain with the highest vertical drop in North America. Much too indimidating for me so I stick to cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. My husband and kids take up the downhill challenge! Unfortunately, with his illness Doug is unable to go this year.
Our ride to Salmon Arm was uneventful yesterday, but the ride back was a white-knuckled one. It took twice as long as normal to get home but we made it! Today the highway is closed due to accidents and avalanche control! We had 2 feet of snow in the last 24 hours. Looks like it is going to keep up tonight. There will be many happy skiers here. Next week when we go to chemo it is supposed to be cold and clear – much better for driving!
Doug had his best “after chemo day” yet today. He was able to watch a movie tonight – he hasn’t been able to concentrate on tv for awhile. We rejoice in the small milestones. Take care.

Nancy…. Where are you located? I have not driven in a snow storm for many years therefore, it would be a problem for me. But, you seem to feel quite o.k. with it. Be safe and please, stay in touch.
    Best wishes,
    Marion
