Thank you all for your quick response and your informative answers. I did research more on the site. Susan, my husband is 59 – close in age to yours!
Doug had blood work today and all his liver markers were down (bilirubin, etc.)- good news! Off to chemo tomorrow. We are supposed to get a huge snowstorm, so I will have to get away early! We are an hour and fifteen away from the chemo centre through the mountains. A road I have travelled many times in the winter when my kids were younger and in hockey and figure skating, so know it well! All the best to all of you. Nancy

Hello Nancy….while we do not know yet about liver flukes it is very suspect but then that doesn’t account for so many ‘younger’ people getting this now. Teddy was in the Korean conflict and also may have had liver flukes. We will never know.
Pam flatters us but I like the new popular expression among the teens today, “we are legit”. A finer, more couragous, more loving family you will find no where else, they are all right here and we are so glad you have now joined us. Before I forget a very happy anniversary.
And…you may want to look up a big mentor to us all, JeffG as he posted quite a lot on mets to his spine. Good luck and please don’t be a stranger now that you took the leap!

Hi Nancy – My husband is 58 and was diagnosed with CC in late July/early August 2010. He is declining now. He was not a candidate for surgery so he did 3 rounds of chemo and did well on chemo although it did not shrink his tumors at all. He also probably had the disease for 2 years prior to diagnosis. He has never been to Thailand, but we would be interested in learning more as you find out new things. Best wishes to you and Doug and you fight this fight – we stand with you. Blessings, Susan

Hi Nancy, my dad died 6 months after diagnosis from cc. He probably had it at least two years prior. He had intense itching and anemia. His doctor did testing, but it was not diagnosed until he became jaundice. He tried a surgical resection and some chemo. It just seemed like we could never get ahead of the symptoms. I will say, however, my dad was 75 and had other health issues. I know what you are talking about when you said you have finally had the courage to speak online. I will tell you the people here are real and will help you in your darkest days. I lost my dad two months ago. They were here for me! I still follow this site and post every so often. We spent time wondering how my dad contracted cc. He was in Thailand during the Vietnam War but was also a smoker in the past. He quit about 20 years prior. He really never had digestive problems in the past. It could have been related to his age. I spent many hours researching information via Internet, but we will never know the exact cause. It hit us out of the blue. Each day gets a little easier, but there are sad times too. I wish your husband the best with chemo. Take breaks when you can as a caregiver. I retired in May as a teacher and had six months as my dad’s caregiver. We had lots of memories together. Think of you fondly, Pam

    Nancy,

Many of us have discussed this and you may want to try the search option and put in liver flukes. Something should come up. I agree, this is a rare cancer here, but is very common in Asian countries.

I am sorry you need to be here, but glad that you found us. As you already know, when dealing with CC this is the best place to be for help & support.

Take care Nancy and keep posting and let us know how things are going for Doug.

    Hello everyone,
My husband Doug was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma in November after 2 months of intensive testing and 6 months of back pain. He has mets to his spine and liver. I have been following your site ever since and want you all to know how much it has helped me. I have finally got the courage up to speak online. Our days are up and down as you all will know well. Doug and I celebrated our 33 wedding anniversary in November and we had a great Christmas with all 3 of our grown children and 2 partners here to celebrate. When we hit bottom we pull up our socks and get positive and continue the fight. He started chemo on December 15th and Doug also receives naturopathic support. Upon extensive research, I have read that cc is the number 1 cancer in Thailand due to liver flukes. Doug and I spent a month in Thailand in Jan. 2007 while our son was going to university there. I have mentioned it to the doctors here wondering if we could have picked up liver flukes there but they seem uninterested. One said that would be rare and I replied that this is a rare cancer here but not in Thailand. Anyone out there with information on this? Once again thanks for the support you have already given me and allowing me to be a part of an amazing group of people. Doug is not a “researcher” like myself and he does not read or search about cc. He prefers that I do the research and let him know if I find any positive news. Wishing better health for all of you in 2011.
