I am very sad to share that my mother passed last night at 10:45pm. I wanted more time with her and wanted my kids to grow up surrounded by her love and support but the next few months or even longer would have been filled with so much suffering due to her cancer so I believe this was the most compassionate and humane way she could have passed away. I will miss her so much.

We made the decision (one we know that she would want) to move to comfort care so she is unhooked from all machines except oxygen and is receiving morphine to help her be more comfortable now. Thank you for the words of support. They mean a lot to me right now.

Anne-My mom had effects from the stroke. She had limited movement on right side, short term memory loss and weakness. She had to learn to talk, write, read (she never did get all that back) and walk again. She managed to stay in her own apartment and do the basics for her self. We filled in all the blanks, she could microwave but not use stove, she had bathing assistance…
She used a walking stick. The doctors could not believe she came out of this and was so independant.

Dear Ann, sending you everything that is positive and good and full of prayers. I hope you can feel the love and energy coming your way from this Board. I also hope you and your brother are talking to your Mom as I do believe she hears you. I learned that with Teddy, he heard everything!

Thanks everyone. I have spent the last 30 out of 34 hours at the hospital. My mom is not responding to people or opening her eyes. Yesterday when we first arrived, she had her eyes open and she smiled when she saw my brother and I but last night and today, she won’t open her eyes or respond no matter what the doctors do to arouse her. They don’t think she’ll make it out of the hospital but she has held steady today…no major changes. CT scans show no new swelling. Chest xrays show no new information. Pulse ox is lowering throughout the day and her breathing is labored. The docs think that respiratory issues are going to be the most problematic symptom. There were a few very scary moments last night with her breathing and she does not want to be resuscitated so we might have to make a quick decision to put her on morphine and that would signify end of life care because she would not be intubated. Agh. This is scary and exhausting and awful.

I’m curious jathy1125, did your mother recover from the stroke physically and mentally or was she pretty debilitated?

Thanks again everyone. I can use all the words of encouragement I can get. And please send healing energy, prayers, whatever you believe to my mother, Ann.

Melissa, I am very sorry to hear the news. I hope things turn for the better for your mom.

My grandma had a stroke while undergoing chemo for uterine cancer. Don’t know what kind of chemo it was. It was back in the early 1970s.

Lots of prayers for you and your family at this time. My mom suffered a major stroke, with major complications and told to call family, well she went on to live 14 years by herself and survived heart attack and cancer all this while having COPD, there is HOPE!
    Lots of prayers-Cathy

    Dear Melissa,

I am so sorry to hear about your mum’s stroke. As you say, all of this on top of your mums cancer. I can’t help really about whether or not strokes are common or not for people who have cancer. But I do know that when my dad was in day care for his cancer, he spoke with a few people who could not get chemo because of their underlying heart conditions. Don’t know if that is helpful or not but just thought I’d mention it.

I hope that things get better for you and your mum and that your mum can make a good recovery. My thoughts are with you and your family and please know that we are all here for you.

    Hugs,

    Gavin

    Hi,
Cancer patients receiving chemotherapy have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular complications, and the risk is even higher if there is a known history of heart diseases.–from uptodate.com.

5fu,cisplatin both have cardiotoxicity, so does gemcitabine.
    God bless.

Melissa…I too am saddened to hear the news. We had few postings in re: to stroke and this cancer. There is however mention of The Trousseau sign of malignancy. Adenocarcinomas of the pancreas and lung are associated with the tendency to cause blood clots. This is something you would want to discuss with the physician.
My mother suffered a stroke in April of this year. (She does not have any cancer that we know of.) But I do understand your concern re: the Heparin. My sister and I wrestled with the decision, but ultimately based on some underlying, other, health issues, we gave the o.k. to administer.
My heart is with you especially for the next few days, as this is the crucial time. Stay hopeful.
    Hugs,
    Marion
