Laurie….I agree with Lainy – hospice is needed and will supply you and Dan the much needed support. Laurie, I also would like to comment on the intervention with suppositories and the positive results achieved. Often I wonder why there is so little use for this in this country. Suppositories are easier to administer then tablets, cannot be vomited out as is the case with oral medication, and don’t cause upset to the stomach. (Our Kris from Sweden named it: her little bullets.)

Dear Laurie, I am sorry you have had to call in Hospice but they will make such a big difference. The bottom line is comfort! Don’t be shy about asking them for anything at all. Teddy was mostly on Morphine with 2 larges doses 2 x a day and also an hourly dose for breakthrough. Worked very well for him. Hospice will be able to help with the gas and bloating as well. Wishing for Dan to be pain free. Be strong.

Marion, when Dan was first admitted they started him on golytly and ducalox and a suppository. I was surprised it worked since nothing we had done at home did the trick. But I think the large quantity of the golytly was the magic . For his pain they gave him a shot of dylaudin (sp?) and fentynal IV. By the time they discharged him they converted the pain meds to 150 mcg fetanyl patch and 40 mg of oxycodone 4x per day as needed. And 400mg ibproven .(I can’t spell).
He’s still in some pain but not as bad as before he went in. Also bloating, gas and heartburn are still an issue. But we have gas x and a host of other OTC drugs for that.
I wonder what Others are taking for pain?
Anyway, it’s good to have him home. I only wish I could be with him all day. I feel guilty when I’m working. Hospice will be coming this week so at least someone will be at our house a few hours a week. And of course I will take FML when I need to.

Peony….So happy to hear your husband is feeling better…..being a patient of Dr. Hirschfeld I know exactly how you feel…..he’s compassionate, caring and he has a pretty good sense of humor also….besides being a terrific Dr. Glad you found your way to him he is a special person…wishing only the best for you and your husband and will be praying for the same! Peony…sure am glad to hear that the pain and constipation have been brought under control. I am wondering: which medications have achieved this great result?

My husband completed 6 weeks of a clinical trial last month. They wanted him to continue but the pain from spine mets was so bad he could barely get out of the house . The pain specialist we see locally kept increasing his OxyContin and condone but still he only had relief a few hours a day. Not to mention the severe constipation. It got to the point that even a saline enema would not work.
Last week we went to see dr Hirsfeld about the trial and whe he heard about the level of pain and continued constipation he admitted Dan into the hospital. He’s been there for 5 days now and his pain is being controlled and he’s having regular bowel movements.
I can’t thank Dr. H. enough. He took control and genuinely cares about his patients.If anyone in the tristate area is looking for a great doc I strongly recommend dr hershfeld at bruckner oncology.
