    Hya Julia and all
I do look in on all of you every evening. I too am pleased that I am able to write in this section about your wanderful news. xxxx

However, I cannot praise our St Mary’s hospice here in Birmingham enough.
They came to our home for the last 10 days or so and were magnificent, nothing was too much. I had a number for any 24 hour calls, so when he passed away in the middle of the night I only had to call and a nurse came and I didnt have to worry at all as she took charge of all of the details, no ambulance, no doctors etc. We were able to get everything done the next day. The hospice then continued to provide me with all free treatments (as Katie has described) and councelling for at least 6 months as it was so traumatic.
Alan didnt go in as it was only 8 weeks and he asked me if I would look after him in our home, as he did have his own home just around the corner.

So in the time since all of this, we as a family have managed to raise

    Hi Julia,

Sorry not posted earlier but your post seems to have slipped through the net on my radar!!

So glad Susan’s bloods are looking good and that she has had a trip to the Marie Curie centre. I did a course for a palliative care module a couple of years ago and my placement was in the day centre of a local adult hospice, I enjoyed it so much.

The patients enjoyed holistic therapies, massage, hair and beauty treatments, relaxation, and most importantly a drop of their favourite ‘tipple’ pre-lunch!! Above all it gave them an opportunity to talk with others in a relaxed, friendly environment.

Here’s hoping to more good news in 2010.

    Hi Julia,

I too hope she enjoyed her visit. Is she going back again next week? You are right in what you say about going, even as a day visitor. But I am hoping that if she goes a few times she will see the good work that they will do there and that she will enjoy it. And a hydrotherapy pool sounds very good indeed!!!

I think if they had a pool like that here, my dad would have never been out of it! They had a “sleep room” here that had all these comfy sofas and mad lighting, and dad spent many hours in it. Especially after his dinner!!

My best to you and your sister,

    Gavin

It’s a Marie Curie one. She didn’t say much about it when she got back, except that it looks really good. I hope she did enjoy her visit, but it must be so scary – even as a day visitor – when the very word “hospice” carries such emotional connotations.

But she said it has a hydrotherapy pool :D :D :D!!!

    Hi Julia,

Excellent news indeed! Is this a Macmillan centre that your sis was at today? I hope she enjoyed it as much as my dad did and I look forward to hearing about her experience today. They really do some excellent work there and dad always loved the atmosphere and the joking!

Best wishes to the two of you,

    Gavin

Thank you all. She’s gone off to a day centre today for the first time. I remember the wonderful things you said about your dad’s day centre, Gavin & I can’t wait to hear what she thinks about hers this evening.
