Linda,
Sorry to hear U of C is not willing to do anything at this point, hope the Mayo trip yields something positive.
About the concert, I just posted and am now editing because I see you were going to drive on through to MN after the concert and that does not seem like a good idea, what time of night would you be getting there? And then you have to be at Mayo by 7:30, that seems tiring to me and I am not fighting cc.

Good luck at Mayo Clinic – that’s where Ben and I started on this journey and believe Mayo is truly an incredible place. Not all doctors are perfect or have the bedside manner that fits everyone, but we found the Mayo doctors as some of the most patient doctors around. Our oncologist was Dr. Pitot – although we only had one meeting with him (but we have called him a couple of times), he had given us good guidance on local administration (although I would say, that sometimes his “bedside manner” can sometimes be abrupt), but he is direct – but has always been right on with his advice…and that’s the most important for us. All of our other doctors at Mayo we also deeply respected.
Good luck and I would be more then happy to help with any navigation while you are there – but they really make it so easy for you.

November 8, 2010 at 12:17 am #43851lulu07SpectatorLinda-I’am wishing u a very successful meeting with the docs at Mayo on Tuesday-u traveling to see them is a nod to u as u r taking your medical care into your own hands and being your own advocate! Hats off to u! As always anyone who is fighting or helping someone fight this disease is in my thoughts and prayers daily.
November 7, 2010 at 7:28 pm #43850valjeeMemberHi Linda,
Best of luck with your appointment on Tues – lets hope you get a good & helpful doc!
As for the concert, tricky one. I wasn’t able to go to any of the concerts I’d booked for in the summer which was a huge disappointment but I knew if I tried I’d have been so ill it would just not have been worth it.
My main sacrifice was Eddie Vedder – such a shame! How about your brother rings Jon Bon Jovi & gets him to come along to the hotel and see you personally? JBJ would take my mind off ANYTHING for a short while!
On the ibuprofen debate, I think that most of the NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, etc) are a potential problem for anyone with problems affecting the GI tract. They can cause gastric bleeding & inflammation so I guess none of us need any help in that direction.
You take care, really hope it all goes well on Tues,
Val x

I was told I am not to take over 2000 mg of Tylenol a day and not to take ibuprofen. Not really sure why. He just said GI patients should not take ibuprofen.
Hope your appointment is not only with a doctor who has experience with cc, but one that is compassionate and has good social skills. I’ve been very fortunate to have great doctors all around at Mayo.

November 7, 2010 at 5:47 pm #43848mlepp0416SpectatorLinda: I hope that when you get to Mayo you are not assigned the same liver specialist that was assigned to my husband Tom. (Dr. Dunn) He had no compassion what so ever and said that getting his external drain internalized was ‘cosmetic at best’ and he did not understand at all why he wanted an internal drain. During our first appointment with him, he came into the room, introduced himself, then spent 20 minutes searching through the records, and kept saying “Jesus”. He asked where we were from and stated “I cannot believe that you drove here from Green Bay, Wisconsin” (It’s about an 8 hour drive)….after 20 minutes I finally asked him what he was searching for and he said “I’m trying to find when and where he had the Whipple Procedure preformed” to which I said “He did not have a Whipple, he had a left liver lobe resection at the Milwaukee VA Hospital on June 16, 2008, with Dr. Thersa Quinn” He looked at me and said “Are you a doctor?”……”No, I’m his wife and I know what was done and when, I’m very involved in his care”.
Luckily the Interventional Radiologist thought differently. Although he tried he was unsuccessful but after getting the pre tumor scans he was willing to try again. After our 2nd trip to Mayo, the IR was still unable to internalize the stent. But at lease we tried, else I would have spent the rest of my life wondering “What If”
So although our trips to Mayo were unsuccesful, I would highly advise Mayo Clinic to anyone whose local doctors cannot figure it out, because they will give it their best shot! The way we figured it was if Mayo could not get the external drain internalized then no one would be able to. Apparently Tom’s new tumor plus the radiation, somehow destroyed the bile duct. So worse case scenario, he has the external drain for the remainder of his life. Things could be worse, right?
And as far as the Bon Jovi concert, I’m kinds leaning towards what Lainy says – I know how much the drive to Mayo tired my poor Tom out and if I’d tried to fit in a concert too, well, I think that would have been just too much for him to handle. It’s amazing how much just riding in a car as a passenger can tire him out. I’m thinking that you just need to get to Mayo, veg in the hotel room, maybe do the hot tub thing, eat a good meal the evening before (cause you won’t be eating breakfast as you will most likely need labs)…..
Hope your trip is a successful one! Did they tell you to plan on staying at least 1 to 3 days?
Go with God and KEEP KICKIN’ THAT cancer.

November 7, 2010 at 4:39 pm #43847lisaSpectatorLinda, best wishes for your consult. I’m with Lainy – take it very easy and quiet and reserve your strength. Something I’ve learned the hard way is just because I “can” do something doesn’t mean I “should” do something. I can’t “will” myself into getting better or not getting sick.
I am also concerned about your fevers and pain. When I have those symptoms, it means the bilirubin is rising and I am getting cholangitis. I pray you can hang in there to see the onc at Mayo.
November 7, 2010 at 3:50 pm #43846katieloumattMemberLinda,
Just to add my best wishes as the others have done for your very important consult with the onc from Mayo.
Fingers crossed, enjoy Bon Jovi if you decide to go.

Glad that Kevin is going to be looked after well while you’re away, and hoping you have a safe and productive trip. Let us know what you decide about the concert.
I’m really hoping the Dr at Mayo will grab hold of this by the horns and start doing something helpful for you. You should not have to work so hard at being your own advocate/doctor!

I have gone to Mayo for the last 3 years. If you are interested I would be happy to meet with you while you are at Mayo. It is about an hour from my house. I have seen 3 different oncologists there. If I can be of any help please just let me know. Feel free to send me an email and I can give you my phone number. Take care and God Bless,
JamieNovember 7, 2010 at 1:14 am #43841highsmithMemberLinda Z-My dad is on a strict no Ibuprofen “diet”. We use Aleve for discomfort and Percocet for real discomfort. Because my dad runs fever on a regular basis, we try not to give him anything extra unless it is 103 or higher. Then, it is ES Tylenol. My dad did have his stomach resected as part of his Whipple, so I think that is part of his issue.
November 7, 2010 at 1:05 am #43840linda-zSpectatorLainy, just checking in and saw your post. Thanks for the advice. It is very good and something I had not thought of at all. This is a small theater and the tickets were not very much at all, so I would think my brother would not mind not going especially if I told him why. Thanks again. After a long ride too, it does sound better to just relax. I’ll be a little nervous anyway, so why not enjoy the quiet instead.
Kathy B. – about not taking Ibuprofen….none of my drs. ever mentioned not taking specific meds, only that Tylenol affected your liver and Ibuprofen is hard on your stomach. Did the Mayo drs. say why Ibuprofen would be bad to take? Maybe all the more reason why I am seeking new drs.
Thanks all,
Linda
November 7, 2010 at 12:54 am #43839lainySpectatorOk, Linda, Here I go, acting like Mother Lainy! I am not sure the concert is a good idea. I would be afraid of picking up something when I had already been running temps during the week. I would be afraid of getting so tired and I would be afraid of ANYTHING at all that might interfere with the visit of my life to Mayo. I would rather be spending the night quietly in a hotel knowing that I will be in good form for Mayo. Only other thing would be to spell out to your brother how important this trip is and if you feel tired at the concert you must leave immediately. I am so sorry, it just does not sit well with me. And you know I am never negative. So call me a worry wart.
At any rate, wishing you so much luck on this very important visit! -
