I think it is interesting that someone from outside the field of medical research could come up with this, it makes me wonder how important the approach to research is, i.e. was he successful because he did not have the same preconceived notions that someone inside the field would have and was thus able to look at the problem from another perspective? It makes me think about another story I saw about video gamers solving a science problem, see:
