Hi Porter, my husband had a CT scan three months after resection and scan showed both a shadow and a spot. Oncologist said he’d be surprised if they were cancerous since John was on gem/cis. Saw the surgeon and he said that the shadow was fluid from the surgery and the spot was scar tissue from where he had removed a spot on his liver. The good advice we received from the Onc, was not to worry about it intil we saw the surgeon. He was in there and had detailed notes on what he saw during surgery….when he saw the CT scan, he knew exactly where it was and that it was scar tissue. I had myself all worked up for nothing.
Melinda AOctober 8, 2014 at 4:11 pm #85036lainySpectatorHi, Porter! I was switched from PETs to CT with Contrast a couple of years ago for the Cancer I had. This month is 5 years Cancer free for me. I am waiting now for a CT date. In March they saw “Shadows” so had a CT again in June and “Shadows” remained the same. IF this months Scan is no different I will go to yearly Scans. I think sometimes it is just hard for us to believe we are OK.
The spots probably would not have shown up right after surgery as they take time to appear. I would bet my whole insides are made up of scar tissues. Keep up your good work and hopefully we will meet this winter.October 8, 2014 at 3:13 pm #85035pfox2100MemberThanks guys. These spots are tiny. 6mm they say. They’ve been on the last 2 scans same spot no growth and no post contrast enhancement. So I am being assured its nothing alarming and just scar tissue. Other who have had resections or surgery, did y’all have scat tissue or spots show up on your scans? These spots were not there my first scan 6 weeks after surgery.
October 8, 2014 at 3:49 am #85034wallsm1SpectatorHi Porter. I have only ever had one PET. It was right after my surgery. My situation was kind of backwards. I had surgery first for a tumor that the Dr’s did not think was cancerous. Then after surgery when they found it was cancer, I was worked up for a primary.
How big are the spots? I would ask if they are big enough to light up on PET. I’m sure if they were concerned about them they would order a biopsy. But you could ask about that as well.Take care,
Susie
October 8, 2014 at 2:27 am #85033mbachiniModeratorHi Porter,
I had a PET at beginning of my diagnosis…and then again when mets showed in my lungs 4 months later. Both times it lit up with metabolic activity. I then went until June of this year….over 4 years before they decided to do another one. I think this last one was specifically to see if the spots on my liver were scar tissue or necrotic……and thank God the spots on my liver showed no metabolic activity…..light show in the liver is no longer showing!! The light show in my lungs is still playing but not as brightly as it could be!! For me it was a good peace of mind to know that there was no activity in the liver at this time. I think each doc has their own personal preference. I have heard of people who have had several PET scans throughout their fight. I also think that insurance may play a part in how many they cover in a certain timeframe as well.Congrats on good scans and blood work! New normal is good…..just takes time to adjust. I always remind myself when I am tired and think I shouldn’t be…..that it is my sign that I need to rest….at least now I feel that I have more of a reason to be tired than just chemo…..like living life…and life is hard work and so worth the effort!!
Take care and God Bless YOU!!
Melinda B.October 7, 2014 at 4:05 pm #10629pfox2100MemberHi all. Hope everyone is doing okay given all of our circumstances
My latest scan looked good as she said there were 2,small spots same spots seen on the previous scan they haven’t grown and are in the same place and they are calling it scar tissue. Blood work continues to look excellent. I still don’t feel up to par and Im starting to realize I’ll have to get adjust to what my new normal might look like. But here is my question. I have had one pet scan and this was at the time of diagnosis last July. I haven’t had one since, even after surgery and all the chemo over the last year. I asked my onc about it and she said she doesn’t think its necessary at this time. My question is this pretty Much the norm? To base everything just off my MRIs? I am kinda of surprised that I never got another pet scan even prior to surgery to see if there had been any spread and what not. And now while not trying to focus on it returning I do think about it as well as what if it has already spread elsewhere , how would I know? Based on current MRIs and bloodwork like I said everything looks fine. Just cuirous others thoughts and experiences with the pets. And if that is something I should pursuse even though the team doesnt feel its necessary. Thanks in advance and blessings to all. -
