Hey Jim,
I would also like to welcome you.
Have you had an ERCP, yet? This is where they stick a camera down your throat, into your tummy and look around. Was very helpful in locating exactly where the tumor is and mine, actually showed there was no vessel involvement, thus having a successful Whipple Surgery on Sept 22.Be prepared for extreme weight loss and nausea. My nausea was very very bad until about Thanksgiving. At that time it turns into extreme bloating, gas and loose stools, which continue to be my issues to date.
Stock up on chicken noodle soup. It was the only thing I could keep down.
What happens is, after this surgery, when you eat your stomach is supposed to empty in a certain period of time, however, after the re plumbing, things just don’t quite work, so, for me, food comes back up. Try to keep yourself hydrated, but, do not drink carbonated drinks. The recovery time for this is longer than anything you can think of. Hopefully, you have short and long term disability , if not, you may want to go online and get signed up for social security disability, as, even after approval, there is a five month wait period.
I hope this does not overwhelm you, and if you have questions, please just ask. Hugs, Good thoughts and of course prayers are being sent your way.

May 18, 2009 at 7:51 pm #28948lainySpectatorHi Jim and welcome to the best little club in the world that no one wishes to join! My husband, Teddy, had a Whipple August of 2005. We are nearing our 4th anniversary! He is now 76 and doing quite well. You can find out all about Teddy by going to our search button and typing in Lainy. If you have any questions I will try to answer them for you. We don’t have too many Whipple’s on this site but its still all part of CC. You have come to the best place and we look forward to hearing more from you.
May 18, 2009 at 7:19 pm #28947marionsModeratorJim…oh yes, early detection is (next to not contracting this cancer, at all) the absolute best situation to be in. Congratulations. And, you are with a very experienced surgeon. Jim, everything is so very positive. I am happy for you. If I could just know how the Robotics are being used in this surgery. It sounds very interesting.

Dr. Paul Hansen – Providence Portland Hospital – Portland Oregon
Dr Hasen is the Program Director of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Sugary, Providence Portland Hospital and is the only Dr. in the Portland area who is using Robotics in his surgeries.
Both Dr Hansen and my Oncoligist Dr Stacey Lewis, director Providence Cancer Center believe I am one lucky guy, to catch the cancer early when it is only in my Bile Duct (as far as they can see)
