I posted elsewhere that I had heard anecdotally of someone who took apricot seeds and is considered cancer-free. I am reading a book right now on this topic:
Title: The death of cancer
Author: Manner, Harold W.What disturbs me the most is that I think the research into this therapy had some promise but has been all but abandoned. It was abandoned because of toxicity but chemo is also toxic. More research might lead to isolating something that might work. I also think that patients who don’t have a whole lot to lose by trying something should be given more options.

February 8, 2011 at 12:54 am #47300peonyMemberHi Nancy, thanks for taking the time to write all this down. I’ll do some more research and also consult with our Onc. Yes, we seem to be on the same schedule ! We live right outside of NYC so have access to many great hospitals and doctors.
Not sure I mentioned but the Pet scan is scheduled on Friday. Good luck to both of us and best wishes and prayers. Keep me posted!!!!Penny
February 7, 2011 at 1:17 am #47299nancy246SpectatorHi Peony, Sounds like we are on the same schedule!
Doug’s meds:
Primal Defense – 3X a day
L-Trpein – 3x a day
4000 UI of Vitamin D a day
Selenium – 200 mcg – 2x a day
HMF – 2x a day
DCA – 1 capsule dissolved in warm water 2x a day with a Thorne B Complex
HEEL Detox Kit – drops are put into water and sipped throughout the day
(stimulates the key organ systems involved in detoxification and drainage process)
Helixor (mistletoe) given as an injection once daily (easy to inject – very small needle)
Biphosphonates – (Clasteon) 4 daily (for bone mets- also used for osteoporosis)
We were also recommended by the naturopath and bought liquid cartilage extract but Doug has been unable to take it – doesn’t like the taste.
Keeping my fingers crossed for both the boys on their upcoming scans!
Where do you live?
Take care and good luck!
NancyFebruary 3, 2011 at 1:35 pm #47298gavinModeratorHi Sharron,
Welcome to the site. Sorry that you had to find us all and I’m sorry to hear about your mum. But I’m glad that you’ve joined us here as you will get a load of support and help from us all. That is great to hear that your mum has made a speedy recovery from her surgery and is feeling fit and good. And from what you have also said, it sounds like she is enjoying life right now and that is excellent.
I’m sure you are aware that the gem/cis combo that was offered to your mum is a very common chemo treatment now for CC and if you use the search function here you will find many discussions about it. I can’t help you specifically with your questions regarding alternative treatments but I am sure that others will be able to do so. We do have an alternative treatments board here that may be of use to you and here is a link to it.

If you have any other questions at all then please do not hesitate to ask and we will all do what we can to help.
My best wishes to you and your mum,
Gavin
February 3, 2011 at 12:17 am #47297peonyMemberHi Nancy, My husband (47) is also stage IV with mets to the liver and spine (and possibly lung). He is on the same chemo regimen of gem/cis. Next week will be his first pet scan since diagnosis. I also asked about a naturopathic and our onc wanted to wait until after the initial pet scan and would then make a recommendation. I gave him a list of what Andy and Linda (from this site) suggested and is working for him. I would love if you would list out what your giving Doug.
Great news and I wish you all the best with the treatment plan.Peony

February 2, 2011 at 5:39 am #47295nancy246SpectatorHi Sharon, My husband Doug (59) has stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma with mets to the liver and bone. We are on cycle 3 of gemcitabine and cisplatin.
We also see a naturopath and Doug takes naturopathic supplements and treatments. He takes pill form supplements at meals and different ones inbetween meals to boost his immunity. We mix “alka powder” in warm water once or twice a day to help bring down the acid levels in his blood (high acid is common in cancer patients). He has a liver detox kit of drops that he puts in water to sip on throughout the day.
Doug takes another pill called DCA twice a day dissolved in warm water. You can read a report about it online by the University of Alberta. The DCA builds up the mitochondria in your cells (which get damaged by cancer). I give him a shot each day of Helixor (mistletoe) which is a natural chemo but it is also boosts the effects of regular chemo. There are many different naturopathic routes that you can discuss with your integrative doctor.
We chose to do both conventional and naturopathic with Doug because his cancer is so advanced but I have read Suzanne Somers book with accounts of people who just did naturopathic. I think one has to believe in whatever path they chose. Our naturopathic doctor supported us fully in the decision to do both. The conventional onocologist said that they prefer that people do not take naturopathic while doing chemo but it was up to us and he wasn’t stongly against.
Doug’s liver markers and tumor markers have been coming down since November. Interestingly he did not start chemo until December 15th, so it was only the naturopathic that was effecting those numbers (started naturopathic in October) After chemo started and we were continuing the naturopathic the numbers dropped even faster – so the combo was good. Next week he gets a scan to see how the tumors look – our fingers are crossed.
I do not know where you live but we are in British Columbia and Doug’s and my extended medical plans cover the naturopathic visits and any testing but unfortunately do not cover medicines. Some can be quite expensive but we are finding them worthwhile.
Oh, Doug takes biphosphonates for his bone mets. The naturopath suggested to see if the onocologist would prescribe them because then they are paid for – which he did.
Sounds like you mom is doing well. I wish you all the best! Let me know if you want more info on the drops and supplements. Take care.
NancyFebruary 2, 2011 at 4:59 am #47294chezwrightaol-comSpectatorHello Sharon,
I’m sure that others can speak more directly to this question which I have also posed before. I also read about the Bloch Integrative Medicine Center in Chicago and wonder what other people’s experience has been there. It combines traditional and alternative treatments with emphasis also on diet, exercise and meditation. Have you read it or heard anything about it?
I was diagnosed with cc late July and operated on Sept. 29th with clear lymph nodes and clear margin, but surgeon had to remove 2/3 of my liver. I could have done a clinical trial but opted not to and have done all the readings you have mentioned and am trying acupuncture, diet, massage, yoga, and guided imagery. My first scan after surgery was last week and it was clear and the CA 19 marker went from 88.5 to 16..which I’ve been told is pretty standard results for so soon after surgery, but I’m still basking in it! One scan at a time!
Please let us know what you decide to do (or your mother does). It’s remarkable that she recovered so quickly from surgery. It took me somewhat longer to get my energy back and for incision to heal, but I’m beginning to feel that surgery is past and the real task of living healthy is now at the fore.
Good luck! I hope you’ll share your decision and how it all goes. Your mother sounds like a very positive person.
KathyFebruary 2, 2011 at 3:29 am #4696shobbsMemberHi – I’m new to this site. My 65 yr old mother was diagnosed with CC end of September, 2010. After couple weeks of complications, she underwent successful removal of bile duct tumor (obstruction) November 10th, with noted abscesses in liver (which were initially thought to be infection and treated with antibiotic therapy). However, oncologist confirmed end December cancer cells – metastatic disease of liver. Yet, no tumors of the liver are currently visible by the “naked eye”/scans. Chemo is being recommended using gemcitabine and cisplatin for a 6 wk cycle = 18wks of tx (2wks chemo tx, 1wk off).
After much research, reading (ie.,The China Study, J. Ratey’s SPARK, Servan-Schrieber’s Anti-Cancer, Richard Beliveau’s Foods that Fight Cancer, Kris Carr’s CrazySexyCancer, cancer studies/clinical trial findings), discussing and meeting with doctor friends and docs using traditional medical model, there still remains uncertainty as to the efficacy of these chemo drugs in treating specifically CC despite it’s use in stnd, 1st line tx (have been quoted efficacy rates of 30%).
As such, wonder about trying alternative routes first before putting undue stress on the body, wiping out one’s entire immune system and increasing risks due to chemo. We have met with an integrative medical doctor (seekerscentre.com) who combines traditional and alternative txs to discuss options. So my real question is the following…
Question: Wonder if anyone is choosing or has used only alternative treatment approaches to treat this disease? I am interested in learning of your experiences….
BTW- To date, my mum (who is also a 45yr type 1 diabetic) has made remarkable recovery from surgery, is incredibly positive and fit – attending weekly exercise programs, enjoying feeling and looking great:)
Thank you to all for sharing your stories of hope and inspiration!
