The American Pain Foundation has an excellent section that provides information, coping strategies and tools to help cancer patients and their caregivers understand the basics of pain management and better communicate with their doctors. You can access the site at http://www.painfoundation.org. Another excellent site for help with cancer pain management is http://www.cancer-pain.org. Maybe it can give you some helpful ideas to discuss with your doc.

A specialist you might want to contact is Dr. Lauren Shaiova. I’ve attended several conferences and have had the opportunity to speak with her afterwards. The one thing that I have heard her repeat at each is that effective pain management is widely available yet patients continue to be under-treated. Perhaps she would be able to provide some direction. She is in New York. You can reach her by email at: lshaiova@gmail.com or lauren.shaiova@nychhc.org.
