Palliative care specialist?

Thanks for the thoughts. tiapatty, our hospital offers the palliative care as a precursor to hospice, so there is one person who coordinates care and is informed of all going on with the different specialist. I think mostly they also coordinate pain care, prior to hospice. I need to meet with hospice in the coming months, so I know what to expect, as I will be the one coordinating all of it. My Dad also 62, was diagnosed April 2010, unfortunatley chemo was never given due to Dads bilirubin being too high, despite 3 stents and now an external drain. I know it’s not the same as your Dad but my Dad is now on pallative care as there is nothing else they can do for him.
He has a District Nurse come once a week to check his BP, temp and also dress and change his external drain. My Dad is still able to care for himself, still eats, though smaller meals, and is luckily in no pain. Dad therefore doesn’t need hospice care or feels like he needs hospice at home just yet. The time will eventually come but we take one day at a time.
Does anyone come to see your Dad at home? If not perhaps this is what they are going to arrange. Hopefully your Dad will recover from all his set backs to enable chemo to take place.

Just noticed marion as posted a link about pallative care in the “supportive, pallative and hospice” section of the forum.

Not sure what you mean, are you talking about hospice? I’m just not sure if there is another specialty between aggressive treatment and hospice. I have said before that I don’t think it is a bad idea to meet with hospice before you are ready, especially if you have no experience with all of this.

My dad has been through a lot. He is 62 with CC and a background of PSC, UC and a couple of colangitis episodes. He is back in the hospital with colangitis today. He had a Whipple in March, with severe and several complications and had four operations in six days. We have had to do physical rehab and several reconstructive surgeries to get his abdomend closed in the last eight months. Because of all the complications, he has yet to be able to do chemo. It looks like he will have a typical protocol if we can get to that point. In the interim, it has been suggested to is to do palliative care. has anyone else done this? My dad was in awesome health prior to this meltdown, so he has been extremely lucky to have survived and gotten back a little strength. He has survived several infections (hospitalization and IV antibiotics needed, but still)…
I have been his caretaker the last 7 3/4 months and I don’t think we are in need of hospice…yet…it will come to that. I have faith and hope and love but this is where we are at…I am just looking for insight at this point.
