Lisa;
If you do need to give away any of the family pets let me know and I will check with some of the rescue people I know. They may have some suggestions or have contacts in Wa. I know they transport from other states also sometimes. Hopefully you will be able to keep them all with you. That’s what I’m gonna pray for because I know how much mine mean to me. Also, what about your horses? Do you have any plans for them? Let me know if there is anything I can do.
Take care and God Bless,
JamieSeptember 4, 2009 at 4:30 pm #31041lainySpectatorYou have an English Springer Spaniel??? I love those. Saw one in a Puppy Store but didn’t want one from them nor to pay what they were asking but he and I fell in love! He was too cute for words and had freckles just like me. I am so glad you are on a track now and as hard as the move will be it will ease up some of your worries.

There is definately a very active english springer spaniel association. I often look to see what they are up to. Springers are definately a wonderful breed. And please dont be shy about asking your friends.Kris
September 4, 2009 at 11:57 am #31039lisaSpectatorWe’re going to try moving in with my Mom and Dad with our pets while our house is for sale. Hopefully Mom & Dad will allow the pets to stay with us. They already have a cat, so adding my four pets is a lot to ask for.
The only two that I think would have a chance at adoption are the English Springer and the younger cat. But I hate to get rid of any of them because they are family, too. Hopefully we can find some good people if it comes down to that.

What about any friends or family? In March we got our 4th dog from an acquaintance that we met through a Golden Retriever rescue. He was the foster for one of our dogs. He ended up losing his house to foreclosure and had 4 big dogs. He was able to keep 3 with him but the 4th is old and cant do stairs and we ended up with him. We certainly weren’t planning on getting another dog but I felt we needed to help. I’ve never regretted it. Maybe someone you know would be willing to help out. What breeds are they? I know that the Golden rescue here will do transports from other states. Take care and God Bless,
JamieSeptember 4, 2009 at 3:39 am #31037jmoneypennyMemberHi – Just my two cents, as a fellow animal lover:
Kris’s suggestion about rescue organizations for specific breeds is a great one.
Also, I don’t know if they still work as well as they used to, but you can put an ad in Petfinder.org – I fostered a dog and my allergies made it impossible for me to keep her and I felt guilty giving her back to the animal rescue place, so I found her a beautiful home with a sweet grandma through Petfinder. The dog was very skittish and shy and sweet and I found the perfect match for her and I’m still so thrilled about it. You might want to check it out — though I do hope you can keep them! Even though they’re elderly, there are people out there (my sister and best friend are 2 such people) who purposely adopt older animals because they’re usually the last ones to get adopted.
Good luck!

I am sorry you are having to make these kinds of decisions. Some cats and dogs easily adapt to changes in living. However, dogs in apartments need walks. It is possible to get a neighborhood kid to walk the dog.I am a hopeful realist. I know that animal companionship is healthy and makes living more enjoyable. If I were you, I would try to keep them with me as along as possible. Do you have family members who could take one or two so that at least you could visit?
Pets are an important part of your mental health. I would hate for you to feel like you are losing everything at once and become loney. Ask around your friends too. I know that I would take another pet if a friend of mine was in your situation.
And another thought, if it is obvious you cant keep them, if your dogs are specific breeds, check to see if there is a breed rescue organization. I know spinger and boykin spaniels have one. They place pets in foster homes until a new one can be found, and they really make sure they end up with good people.
Hugs,

I understand your predicamen exactly! We had a wonderful kitty named Maggie who kept me company during the long days and months after Gary’s Whipple surgery and then during chemo. I had the time then to play with her, be around most of the time, and enjoy her. Now our life has changed quite a bit, and we were making trips to Duke that sometimes lasted for weeks at a time. We also leased a condo in Florida and were able to get there for a couple of short stays. Our neighbor was kind enough to watch Maggie, but that was hard on everyone. When we decided to go to Florida for most of the year, I was heartbroken that they wouldn’t allow pets and would have to find a new home for Maggie. I refused to put her anywhere that she would be in a cage while waiting to be adopted, so I started putting up flyers at the vets, grocery stores, retirement homes, etc. I was amazed at the response and was able to find her a good home.
It wasn’t easy for me to give her up, but I am so glad it happened. The demands of all our lives going through ilness is burden enough. Priorities are EXACTLY what we need to examine. Eventhough Maggie was relatively easy to care for, life in our household is much simpler now, and I don’t feel the guilt of knowing I was leaving her alone, not having the time to play, etc. Good luck with whatever you decide. I am so sad about your predicament. I suspect you feel about your animals as I feel about my cat, Casy — they are members of the family, period.
Have you been able to make any progress about your home? Were you able to get info on reverse mortgages? Is it possible for someone you know to buy the home and rent it you (I know this is farfetched…)
I understand the issue about the pets. I would hope that wherever you land would at least allow the dog and cat. And if care is an issue, there should be kids at any nearby high school who need “service” credits and ought to be happy to perform such a service.
I know I don’t have great solutions. Just know I am sending all my good wishes.

September 2, 2009 at 2:34 am #31033lainySpectatorI know it’s hard when it comes to pets but….priorities. Perhaps some people in a retirement home would love the older pets.
September 2, 2009 at 2:13 am #2633lisaSpectatorI have 2 cats, 2 dogs, and 2 horses. I love them very much, but I am worried about them. I need to/want to sell my house soon. The thing that is really holding me back is what to do about the pets. A dog and cat are each 10 years old, and another dog and cat are about 5 years old. This is their home.
I know it may be silly worrying about pets, but I was wondering if anyone else has advise or shares similar concerns about their pets.
