No experience with receiving platelets because my Mom never needed them. But I’d like to give a plug to platelet DONATION. My husband did this for years. I don’t know if platelets are in lower supply than blood, but I do know that he was there for over 2 hours each time, so I think it’s a bit more of a time committment on the donor’s part.

I’m glad I read this thread. It’s given me an idea to honor my mother, all those on this board touched by CC, and cancer patients in general – start donating platelets, and encourage others to do the same!

The transfusion went well. In fact I feel asleep because they have me a Benadryl to counter any side effects I might have had! *g* Today I go for a blood test to see if my levels are high enough for chemo on Thursday. Crossing fingers!

My dad has the Red Cross to thank for his life. He has had dozens and they are the easiest thing. He always feels good as soon as they are done and is peppy for days!!!! Don’t worry a bit!!!

My Mom just had two units transfused a few weeks ago. Again a walk in the park. Don’t worry, in comparison to everything else, it’s a piece of cake.

My son had many blood transfusions. They are a walk in the park….no pain, no nothing. After you have one, you probably will feel terrific. Good luck – Nancy

Joolz…..I am hoping for others to chime in and share their experiences with you. Additionally, by entering “blood transfusion” into the google search function (top, right of page) you will be able to read up on previous threads discussion this issue. It is not unusual. I know that it won’t hurt. And, you will much better.
    All my best wishes,
    Marion

Even though I’ve had chemo, radiation and surgery for my other cancers, I’ve never had a transfusion. Getting one for this time around and am a tad nervous about it. It will be given to me via my port so I can’t imagine it will hurt. They say it will take about an hour.

    Has anyone else had one?
