My friends, Mum’s CA19-9 was 270 yesterday, other things are still ok. We saw the Dr and he confirmed that it was recurrence (95% of the possibility). He emphasized the sooner we have chemo, the higher our chance of pro-longing her life is. We came to see another Dr and he also said that. So, it finally came back and we now have to fight again.
The proposed schedule for chemo is: Oxaliplatin + 5FU + Gemzar (totally like the adjuvant chemo she got last 2 years) Day 1 & Day 7. So we have to go to Singapore on Monday, having chemo then go back to Vietnam. Then go back to Singapore on Friday to have chemo on Saturday, then go back to Vietnam. 2 weeks later, the cycle is repeated.
Just to share with you the situation. I will update her condition for your infor.
Best wishes,
MinhSeptember 1, 2010 at 6:33 am #39683devoncatSpectatorIsnt that funny. My tumor only shows up on PET and not on MRI or CT. This cancer is so different between people. Hang in the Minh. Thinking the best for your mom.

September 1, 2010 at 3:44 am #39682haiminhMemberHi all, I have just been informed by our oncologist that the PET scan shows everything normal. For the assumption of infection or cholangitis, he said: if it is the case it must be shown in the PET. So what he concerns is that there are some cancer cells somewhere inside, not “concentrated” enough to be shown in the PET.
I also talked to our Surgeon and he said he would prefer an MRI or CT with contrast, to see things clearer because sometimes PET does not show clearly with this type of cancer and that area.
The oncologist said Mum might have chemo next week to prevent things from being more serious although at the moment he is not sure what is exactly inside her. I am quite confused and upset. This is quite similar to the time I decided for her to get adjuvant chemo. But i think this time, I will not. Because she is still fine, and only CA19-9 cannot prove anything.
Maybe, we will have an MRI next week to further investigate the issue inside.
Thank you all for your shares and wishes.

Just wanted to let you know that I was diagnosed with intrahepatic CC. My tumor markers CA19-9 and CEA were never in the abnormal range. The highest my CA19-9 ever went to was 40. It is now 14 with my CEA at 0.2. These labs are just one of the tools used for diagnosis, for me I keep a closer watch on my liver function labs.

MarionAugust 31, 2010 at 2:20 am #39678haiminhMemberJust to give you some update: Last month, Mum had a blood test and CA19-9 was 117, and this morning it was 188. Still an increasing trend. Immediately the Dr asked her to have a PET scan now. Tomorrow I will have the result and let you know then.

I tried sending you an e-mail telling you about my diagnoses last July and what I have done since then.
BUT, I was notified that it couldn’t be delivered. so if you want to give me your address, you can e-mail me by clicking the e-mail under my name.
TheresaJuly 18, 2010 at 6:36 am #39675rowena32MemberHi, Minh,
You can go to the top of the page and put in Rowena32 on the right hand side and click, search. It will bring up my past postings which will update you on my CC (bile duct cancer), but I will, also, send you an e-mail.
TheresaJuly 18, 2010 at 4:19 am #39674haiminhMemberHi Theresa, could you pls tell us your status now? Have you been with CC or it is just a extraordinary increase in CA 199? Did you have any treatment before? Hope all the best for you.

July 17, 2010 at 7:15 am #39673rowena32MemberHi,
I’m like some of you. I am concerned about the rise of my CA-19-9. The blood test I had on Monday came back 9880, up from the month before of 6658. In January, it was 1525 and has been going up every month since then. I do not have any symptoms of an infection. I will let you know what my doctor says when I see her on Monday.
TheresaJuly 7, 2010 at 5:02 am #39672haiminhMemberThank you all for your post. I did think about cholangitis, however my Mum did not have any symptoms like fever, pain, or high WBC, etc… All is normal.
hi Rick, did your Dr tell you which kind of infection you had? Did you have any other symptoms like fever or bad blood count?

July 6, 2010 at 7:56 pm #39671elmoksMemberIt does seem that every time my mom has Cholangitis (and has fever, throwing up, dark urine, pale stools) her CA919 is also up. We just went to the Dr. today and on 2/1/10 her CA919 was 70 and now it’s 4000 and she has NO other symptoms…. I’m like you though, it makes me worry, upset, etc. I’ve heard not to put much into the CA919, but how can you not. I wish the best for you and your mom!!!!
July 6, 2010 at 6:43 pm #39670rick-kampMemberminh,
Try not to put too much value in the CA 19-9. At the highest point, mine was up to over 14,000. The next week it was down to 8,000 and moving down since then. The reason it was so elevated at that point was an infection – just as your surgeon mentioned.
