haiminh…..some of our members had some bouts with Cholangitis. It can easily be treated with antibiotics. You might want to read up on it while using the “google search function.” Hopefully, the trend of the raising CA 19-9 will not continue.

Hi all, I have just talked to the surgeon who did operation for my Mum and he said it could be some kind of infection that could make CA 199 higher. From my thoughts, this is quite strange because if there is any infection the body could react in some way (fever, WBC…). Do you have any ideas about this?

Anyway, at least I have 1 reason to believe that it is not the recurrence.

    Dear Marions,

Thank you so much for your share. I have just talked to the Dr and he said he had no idea on the reason why this is increased, because other things are ok :( So he requested another blood test in 1 month. He also said that whatever the place of recurrence is, this index could be increased. And he is thinking that the cancer cell is still there, which would be the reason for the increment.

Anyway, we will have another test and will keep you updated.

    Best wishes for you all!

Dear Minh…..The CA19-9 in itself in itself is not an indicator of progressive disease although, it will be taken in consideration when evaluating other test results such as, blood tests, scans, or specific symptoms described by the patient. But other causes also can increase this particular protein. I would assume that the physician will keep a close eye on this. We have had various discussions re the CA 19-9 marker and you can find the previous threads by using the search function (top page.) Please, share with us what the doctor has said.
    Good luck and best wishes,

Hi my lovely friends, my Mum had a successful resection surgery 2 years ago and then followed with 8 rounds of chemo in 6 months. Since then she had blood tests every 2 months and PET scan every 6 months.

The last PET scan was 3 months ago and it was ok, nothing abnormal. However, at the same time, the blood test showed only one abnormal in CA 19.9 (it was 41). Other blood indexes were ok (the liver is good). I asked the Dr and he said this index was very sensitive so this was ok.

Today she just had a blood test and CA19.9 is 150. the rest is ok, nothing wrong. I am very upset now.

Do you have any ideas about this increment? Is it a signal of the recurrence? I am seeing the Dr this afternoon and may ask him about this, however I still really need your advice. Thank you so much for your help and best wishes for you.
