I agree with dragonfly, continue to gather other opinions. On this board we have seen portal vein invasions of different degrees and some have been fortunate to have it resected however, I have been told that it depends of the location of the portal vein invasion. Japan appears to have a higher rate of Cholangiocarcinoma then the US has. I have heard of one particular surgeon, uji Nimura in Nagoya. Possibly, you can find him as I have not contacted him personally, as of yet. Also, our site has listings of major cancer centers which you might want to peruse. Others may be able to recommend physicians of their choice. Good luck and please, stay in touch.
    Good wishes coming your way,

If he can not get a second opinion, I would get his records and scans and show it to the docs there in Japan. Hopefully they will see a positive solution. Good Luck to you and your future wife. She will need you more than ever now. My husband is still my rock when I lost my mom.

    Hello,
I am currently living in Japan with my fiance (we are both from Pennsylvania)

My fiance’s father was just diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma. The tumor is around 6cm and has invaded the Portal Vein, so the doctors at University of Pennsylvania said that his tumor is not resectable. As far as they know, it has not spread. We submitted the data to Sloan and Hershey medical center, but we haven’t gotten a second opinion yet.

He is only 50 years old. He is otherwise healthy. His heart is working great. his father just passed away half a year ago from cancer. We are losing our mind…

They are gonna start chemo/radiation therapy this week. It will be for 5 times a week for 6 weeks. My fiance will go back to the states and look for a job around where her dad lives in PA. I am trying to look for a job before I move, because two incomes gone at once will be too risky because cancer treatment is very expensive.

Sorry for the long introduction, but we have couple questions

    1. Will this chemo/radiation likely to shrink the tumor and be resectable?
    2. We currently live in Japan, where CC is extremely common compared to the states. I am fully bilingual in Japanese and English. Should we look into transferring her father over here?
    3. I found couple articles regarding Japanese doctors performing portal vein and hepatectomy with promising results
    http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/112199767/abstract?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0
    http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1356151

Ofcourse, if the combined removal is performed in United States with promising results, I would transfer him immediately. However, from what I understand, that really isnt the case…

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.
