    Hi Vineet,

My wife is also a patient of Dr. Kelley at UCSF. We have met with many doctors, and we are very happy with Dr. Kelley. I think Anju will get world-class care from UCSF.

I think there is pretty good research linking liver flukes and cholangio carcinoma. Pesticides would make sense as well, but I have not read about that link.

However, my understanding of cancer is that getting rid of the triggering “cause” (i.e. either pesticides or liver flukes in this case) would not cure or even treat the cancer. As I understand it, cancer occurs when the DNA of a particular cell gets so messed up that the cell starts replicating uncontrollably. The original cell DNA could get messed up by chance (e.g. just random mutations during cell division) or the DNA could be more likely to get messed up under certain conditions like inflamation from liver flukes.

Anyway, once the DNA has mutated, and the cell growth begins, removing the contributing factor such as liver flukes or pesticides would not stop the out of control growth (but I guess may make future mutations and cancers less likely)

Keep in mind, I am not a doctor, so I may not have all of that exactly right, but I did want to at least describe my understanding.

If you are interested in more information, the national cancer institute has this description of cancer:

You are a great brother for trying to figure out ways to help your sister. I wish her and you all the best.

Hello Lainy. In response to your questions, Anju’s CC is within the liver (i.e. intra-hepatic) and is 4th stage.
    Cheers. Anju’s brother Vineet

Anju……I would like to add to Lainy’s comments that the liver fluke Clonorchis sinensis is also called the Chinese liver fluke. It belongs to the same category as the human liver fluke, Trematoda, phylum Platyhelminthes. Southeast Asia, Japan, China, and Taiwan have a high rate of Cholangiocarcinoma related to infestation of this parasite.
    Hugs,
    Marion

Dear Vineet, I am not a Medical person was a Caretaker like you but as far as I know these Parasites are not detectable and most often CC itself is hard to detect until in more advanced stages. Usually when it is detected earlier is when a patient goes in for tests for other physical reasons. Sadly, the most we know is that we know not much. BUT with that said new treatments are popping up and new research is being done. My husband, Teddy had great faith and used that faith to get him through 5 years of CC, he was 78 when he passed. Anju is at a good Hospital but please keep in mind that 2nd opinions are extremely important and the Doctors do understand as knowledge and validation are our most powerful tools. Do you know what stage Anju is and where her CC is located? Be very strong as it will help you and her a ton.

Thank you Lainy for your valuable response about Anju who is being treated by Dr Robyn Kate Kelley UCSF. Initially she is being treated with old fashioned Gemzar and Platinol.

She is also healing through her Christian faith to grow the person behind the person who has a disappointing physical condition. We are feeling blessed so far despite the challenges ahead.

I understand from your response that with the onset of CC, the parasite leaves the bile duct and that a simple stool ova test may not be of much use.

    Thank you.

Dear Brother of Anju and what a wonderful Brother you are! Welcome to our remarkable family. Where is Anju being treated and what is the treatment?
So, you already know about Liver Flukes!~ Nothing has been proven yet what causes CC. I do believe my husband who served in Korea in 1951 ate the fish that carries the Parasite. He was Sicilian and would eat anything. There is no way that we know of to test if one had/has the Parasite. It lives in the bile ducts 30 – 40 years then leaves and leaves behind CC. I do feel we have had a Sushi craze here for quite a few years already and we do NOT know where that fish comes from. As for any fish best to stick to Trout, Salmon and Tuna and make sure it is cooked well.
4 of my Grandkids are half Japanese and love Sushi and I made then promise to not eat it anymore as we do not know where the fish comes from. The other factor may be environmental, we just don’t know. I have noticed that since our site has been on line (for about 8 years now) we get more CC patients from the both Coasts. Please tell us some more about Anju and know that you have come to the best place for help.

    Dear Fellows

My 56 year old sister Anju was recently diagnosed with primary bile duct and non-primary liver cancer. She started chemo last Wednesday, 9th April 2014, and is breezing through the treatment so far.

As her house is adjoining a golf course and I heard of a possible link between certain cancers and golf course pesticide exposure, I am wondering if there is any evidence of a connection to bile duct cancer. If there is a possible link it can easily be reversed by moving homes.

As she moved to USA from Hong Kong some years ago and her love for sushi, I am also wondering whether there is a link to a liver fluke resulting from exposure to a parasite. This parasite can enter the body by eating fluke-infested, fresh-water raw or undercooked fish. In China 15 million people carry liver fluke. A simple stool ova test may tell us if this parasite is in her system and if this is the root cause promising treatments may help remove the parasite.

    Thank you.
