Thanks guys! She woke up after a nap last night, sans nausea, gleefully ate, slept most of the night, and woke up with only minimal discomfort. Hopefully the Zofran is effective, and like Lainy mentioned, this is just par for the course.

Dot……I have learned that indigestion is a side effect of the invasive surgery your Mom has undergone. Some physicians prescribe Creon automatically, some patients do well with digestive enzymes purchased over the counter. Perhaps a digestive enzyme will not only help with the belching, but with the nausea as well.

Hi Dot. What Mom is feeling goes with the territory. I think Nausea is common for any major surgeries. I am in my 5th week of recuperation and still getting nauseous. Zofran always worked for me but not lately. I would call the ONC and tell him that the Zofran is not working. My husband had hiccups and burping after his Whipple for months, nothing would help. Then a Pharmacist friend of our told us about Brioski (sp). It is OTC (over the counter) and in a blue container and after nothing help him at all this cured the hiccups after one hour. Best of luck as I know these things can be annoying. Oddly, I found when I force myself to eat something the nausea goes away!

    Hi all,

My mother is recovering well after a hemihepatectomy of her left lobe 3.5 weeks ago. She left the OR with negative margins and good LFTs (aside from the expected whacky post-op levels), and is recovering well. Stitches are out, and she walked 1.5 miles today (she’s a pistol).

Her biggest complaint, besides the expected fatigue, is belching and nausea. Her surgeon prescribed a PPI and Zofran, but it’s not doing as much as she’d hoped. She’s so happy that her pain is gone (she’s off of all narcotics, hardly even tylenol), but this is something that’s disheartening for her. She wanted to feel perfect yesterday.

As background: my mother is a 50 year nursing veteran, regular yogini, and general badass. We don’t do patient stuff well, but she’s been very diligent about doing all her surgeon has requested.

Any post-op patients have suggestions for curtailing nausea? Is this a thing?
