Rena, Hospice does not mean the end but it is wonderful how they willl ease things up for Mom and make things so much more comfortable for Dad. I had a Hospital bed set up for Teddy in the bright and airy living room where the big TV was. After the first day he said he was glad we did it. I am glad you are going to visit and it might help to set this up when you are there for their suppport. The ONC will put in a call and Hospice usually comes out the next day to interview and then they set up everything as Dad wants it. Best of luck.

LisaDecember 3, 2012 at 5:05 am #66914renaMemberDad is finally home from the hospital, but he is very weak and still not feeling well. I was really hoping that he would get some energy back at least for awhile. It is really hard for mom to see him like this. It makes me so sad when I think about it too hard. Before he left the hospital, the hospice counselor spoke to them. I don’t think that either of them are ready to talk or think about that. But the way that dad’s health is quickly declining, it may very soon be necessary. I plan to talk to them a little more about hospice during my visit with them this week. I am so excited to see them, but I also know that it is going to be really hard for me too see dad so ill. I last saw him early November and he was beginning to really feel the illness, but since has gotten much worse. I pray for strength for my family daily!

November 30, 2012 at 1:49 pm #66912lainySpectatorOh, Rena, that is fantabulous! Yippee! What a way to start the weekend. Thank you for this update. I bet you were overjoyed to hear his voice on the phone! Teddy had external drain bags and eventually even golfed with them. Have a great weekend.
November 30, 2012 at 8:43 am #66911willowSpectatorThat’s great news, Rena!
November 30, 2012 at 5:45 am #66910renaMemberFinally some good news!!! First of all, dad called me this morning and said that he had a bowl of cream of wheat and fruit in front of him! Yes, he can finally eat after his bout with pancreatitis. He was so excited. He was able to keep all food down today! His internal bleeding is finally subsiding…there was very little blood today and his lab work all showed improvements! It was finally determined that a vein was bleeding due to friction caused by his previous drain tube. If he can stay stable over the next two days, he will get to go home over the weekend. He will have to go home with drain bags but its a small price to pay after going through the past few days! I plan to go visit next week and stay for a few days! It will be great to spend another few days with them!

I am sorry your father is going through all this. I wonder if IV would be an option, as Lainy mentioned. My Dad was on IV liquids that sustained him for a while. Hoping that he can get some much needed assistance with this. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.
God Bless,
Missing UNovember 28, 2012 at 6:19 am #66908marionsModeratorRena…esophageal varices can be banded off. They do however form when portal vein is occluded which never is a good sign. At this point I would not worry too much about his non-existent food intake, but would try to stay in touch with the physicians. My heart is with you.

MarionNovember 28, 2012 at 3:13 am #66907lainySpectatorRena, I feel so bad that your Dad is having to go through all this. I just can’t help you with this except to send prayers your way. Not sure about the no food but anytime I have been on an IV I never felt hungry. I think if they were concerned about eating they would do something about it. I have a nephew who has chronic Pancreatitis and when he gets a bout he stops eating. I would imagine food makes it extremely painful. I sure hope you get better news tomorrow. Stay strong!
November 28, 2012 at 2:08 am #66906renaMemberAnother curve ball….dad bleeding continued through the night and this morning his levels were dangerously low so he was given blood. Tomorrow they will attempt to remove his plastic stent. At the same time they will check for variances. I searched postings on this topic last night and had already began to wonder about that. However, when they said the bleeding was being caused by the stent…we went with that. Perhaps it is both! Regardless, they should figure it out tomorrow. In the meantime, he still has not been able to eat because of the pancreatitis…..is that common with this condition….no food???? It just makes me so sad that he is trying to fight this and has not had a bite to eat since Saturday!!! It seems so cruel….please share if this is the protocol???
Trying to stay sane!
RenaNovember 27, 2012 at 7:47 pm #66905gavinModeratorHi Rena,
Glad to hear that the docs have now found out what was causing your dads bleeding and I hope that they get this sorted asap. Also, hope that your dads starts to feel a lot better real soon.
As to what you say about CC, yup, I am so with you on that one.

November 27, 2012 at 7:56 am #66904marionsModeratorRena…good to know that your Dad is getting some rest. My fingers are crossed for a better day tomorrow and for the stent situation to be resolved. Couldn’t agree more with your statement about this cancer.
Hugs and good luck.
MarionNovember 27, 2012 at 3:35 am #66903darlaSpectatorRena,
I totally agree CC SUCKS! That said, I am hoping tomorrow is a better day for all of you. Just take it minute by minute if need be. Let us know how things are going.
Thinking of all of you and sending lots of love & hugs from Plymouth.

November 27, 2012 at 3:06 am #66902lainySpectatorRena, I am so sorry for what your Dad is going through but sounds like they have caught the culprit. Proof once again that CC seeks out only the strongest and most courageous. I sure hope that tomorrow is a better day. Thank you for keeping us updated and I know it is 100 times harder because you are out of town. Be strong!
