KerryNovember 22, 2013 at 12:06 am #76954marionsModeratorKwilson…great advice and something we don’t want to loose in the threads. Would you be so kind and re-post the above in our Nutrition link?

I’m a little late to this post, but wanted to let you know that Sunwarrior, is an excellent protein powder. It’s vegan, and comes in both vanilla and chocolate. I’ve done a lot of research on this as I was trying to find the most “pure” version of protein powder out there for myself, as well as for my dad. It tastes really great, and you can add a bit of it to almost anything.
Also, since a lot of the adult pre made shakes don’t taste great, on the advice of a nurse friend of mine I tried Pediasure, in vanilla, as a possible alternative. Same nutrients, but much better taste. I buy the mini bottles of them from Costco and my mom adds a mini bottle of that as well as the powder to a shake she makes for my dad each night with ice, almond milk, frozen yogurt, and occasionally pumpkin puree. Hope this helps, good luck!
KerryNovember 2, 2013 at 3:39 am #76952marionsModeratorbananagirl…..Advanced cancers such as Cholangiocarcinoma often lead to a wasting syndrome called cachexia that can be devastating for patients and their families. Characterized by a dramatic loss of skeletal muscle mass and often accompanied by substantial weight loss, cachexia overzealously breaks down skeletal muscle and adipose tissue, which stores fat.
As mentioned by the others, small meals, high in protein, spread throughout the day, might help slow the process of cachexia. Personally I would not be too concerned as to where the protein comes from rather, I would focus on the foods your Mom likes best. Adding protein powder to ice cream, milk shakes, fruit shakes, etc. all may work well as long as your Mom is able to tolerate it.

MarionNovember 2, 2013 at 1:11 am #76951lainySpectatorHi Banana girl! Teddy tried them all including Boost and Ensure ended up drinking only Instant Carnation Breakfast which was recommended by Hospice. He loved the vanilla and I would blend in a Banana (Aha) or other fruit. Blend it real good. I has everything you need for nutrition and can take the place of any meal. I usually gave it to him for Breakfast and if he wanted sometimes for other meals. Also try some comfort foods. Mac & Cheese, homemade soups, eggs or egg salad, peanut butter on toast or crackers, chicken stew over noodles…you get the idea. Give her small portions or she will feel overwhelmed. Rather than meals let her ‘graze’ all day long. Rice pudding, jello, baked apple etc. I answered this before your email, sorry. I will go to that now> Best of luck.
November 1, 2013 at 11:14 pm #76950kvollandSpectatorThere are several different protein powders and the like you can use. My husband lost 40# after surgery and we had a terrible time with his protein levels.
There is Ensure Clear which comes in Peach Mango and Berry Pomegranate and it’s not too bad, a little sweet for me. There is also Glucerna which is designed for diabetics but we found it to be a little easier for him to drink. Carnation Instant Breakfast may work.
The big thing we did was got to GNC (local health food store but it’s a chain so you may have one close or try online). They had a bunch of different protein powders that you can try. We did cookies and cream and then Unflavored powders. We used the unflavored in lots of different things like in mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, yogurt, soups, etc.
We also made protein shakes for him every night. Frozen fruit, couple of scoops of ice cream, scoop of protein powder then add milk and blend in the blender until about the right consistency. You can add any flavors or fruit or skip it and add fresh fruit or peanut butter….you get the idea.
Also make sure every calories counts by staying away from “junk foods.” We even bough protein bars and snacks that were high in protein to help.
Frequent smaller meals through out the day can help to.That’s all I can think of right now. You may see if you can access a dietitian to help with specific goals and recommendations.

November 1, 2013 at 9:19 pm #76949kris00jSpectatorOh, boy. Do you have a health food store nearby? They usually have protein powders. And depending on the store, you might find someone who can help.
Does she not like the taste or the texture of ensure? Because the easiest way to use the protein powder is mixed in colder foods or in smoothies.November 1, 2013 at 9:13 pm #76948bnanagirl1SpectatorThanks. My mom hates ensure. She is losing at least a pound a day.
November 1, 2013 at 9:07 pm #76947kris00jSpectatorI use unjury. You can mix it in food, drinks, etc. just nothing too hot. You can buy a sample online to see if you like it.
No more than 20g at a time. Supposedly that’s all the body can absorb at once.
Have you tried ensure drinks? They have lots of calories in them, plus necessary nutrients.
Good luck and let me know how things are going.November 1, 2013 at 8:26 pm #9086bnanagirl1SpectatorAny recommendations? My mom has been losing weight like crazy.
