Timely subject. I just applied for Soc. Security Disability yesterday.

In my case, I have STD and LTD through my employer. They will pay me $2700 per month.

I am required to apply for SSD as part of my insurance disability.

The disability payment I received as an insured will be reduced by the amount of SSD that I eventually receive, so I will not be making over $2700. The $2700 is the cap. Definitely not getting rich here.

Also from what I understand, any SSD money I get for my daughter will also reduce my private insurance amount.

If I want to work part time and stay on disability, I can make up to $980 per month. The $980 applies to everybody for the year 2009.

assuming that the company has a plan for short term disability and than ltd, then i think yes….after short term dis. which should be 26 weeks he will be put on ltd….and one of the prerequisites is that he must file for ss disability…if he is approved for s.s.d. he will have to pay back what he recieved when he was on short term dis….his s.s.d benefit, if approved with be what ever he was entitled to at his retirement age…if he is recieving short term dis. now inquire about the tax situation…it is taxable for it is considered third party income….good luck ron

I was told you can not make over 700.00 per month, in order to qualify for SSDI. Also, the disability insurance, both long and short term, has to run out or be canceled, or its double dipping , so to say, and the insurance company can sue to get the money returned.

Also, there is a five month waiting period for SSDI, I don’t believe your allowed any income during this time frame, and yes, the short and long term insurance counts as income.

Please read the links that was posted, and also you do need to talk with the insurance company as well. I will be hoping for the best of outcomes for you all. Hopefully , with the disability , the employer will continue to pay for the health insurance….

Hey Katie, from what I understand, you can’t be working at all…at least that was our situation…Lee was able to collect from the time he applied and was accepted including all of the back time he had missed. If you have children under 18 you can collect for their benefit for them as well. Good luck and God’s blessings to you and your family.

Hello Katie…welcome to our site. Until others have a chance to respond to you it might be helpful to peruse some other conversations in regards to SS. The Search function is a great tool for this. Simply enter “Disability” and ignore the “Author.”
I am wishing for a successful resection and please, stay in touch.

    Hi
If my husband is on a Sick Leave of Absence with his company and receiving Short Term Disabilty ( and later LTD), can he still be eleigible for SS Disabillity? His disability benefits are not high so we’re hoping he can get SS too. His resection is scheduled for the 8th. He is a pilot that needs a medical certificate so I know it will be some time that he’s even able and/or qualified to return to work (assuming all goes well!).

Thanks to anyone who can help out.
    Katie
