Daisy….as Susie mentioned, adjuvant radiation therapy ( prophylactic) is likely to be recommended within a short period of time following resection. However; the efficacy of this treatment has not been investigated in a phase III clinical trial setting and it is for that reason that experts agree or disagree on this approach. This of course makes it difficult for the patients. As you have experienced, the nature of the complexity of a biliary surgery prohibits some surgeons from attempting curative or palliative resections. Often times this is coupled with the expert’s opinion that based on the disease presentation, a surgery for this particular patient is of no benefit. In your Mom’s case, one must assume that she is cured and that vigilant follow-up care is adhered to.

MarionOctober 30, 2014 at 4:00 am #85300wallsm1SpectatorI think they would have preferred if I got radiation right after surgery and then got chemo. But I had already started my chemo before it was recommended I get radiation. So I did 3 cycles of chemo, radiation, and then the remaining 3 cycles of chemo.
I had no lymph node involvement. My last MRI was in May and it did not show signs of disease.take care!

They recommended the radiation following chemo?? Did you have any lymph node involvement? Also have you had any reoccurrences?October 29, 2014 at 9:01 pm #85298wallsm1SpectatorHi. I had I resection 3.5 years ago. I received adjuvant chemo and radiation.
Radiation was recommended for me because I had a very close surgical margin.
However, they wanted to do the radiation soon after surgery. I was actually started on chemo and I received 3 cycles, then got radiation along with an oral chemo, and then finished the other 3 cycles of my iv chemo.
So, I think they like to perform radiation soon after the surgery. I’m not sure with her being a year out if they would recommend it but that is always something you can discuss with her Dr’s.
I did get 3 opinions on the radiation and that’s exactly what I got, 3 very different opinions. Some recommend it and some don’t.take care and good luck!

October 29, 2014 at 4:00 am #10693daisySpectatorFirst I will start out saying mom’s doing great! She is past the 1year mark from her resection, finished chemo months ago and life for her is getting back to normal. After her resection the oncologist at Barnes recommended radiation following chemo. I have read 3 cases of long term survivors who did just that and some are 8 years out!! The onc at Sloan does not think she needs it because he says there is nothing to radiate. From my understanding they would radiate the area surrounding the resection site. The liver as we all know regenerates itself so the argument that what radiate healthy tissue because you can’t radiate the same area twice doesn’t make sense. Not trying to overpower the docs but there game plan is to sit back and wait for it to come back mine is to be PROACTIVE not reactive. If I listened to the first 5 docs mom never would of had the resection since they deemed her inoperable…I guess that’s why my trust level isn’t quite there. Any thoughts on this topic???
