Hi Katie,
This is great news indeed! Thank you so much for letting us know how your mum is doing today. So very glad to hear that her pain is minimal and that she didn’t need the pain meds today! Fingers crossed that your mum can get her strength up now and onwards to the 28th! Let us know how everything goes.
Best wishes to you and your mum,
Gavin
September 11, 2011 at 9:23 pm #52482katielinnMemberThanks Gavin, Marion, and Lainy!! Her pain is so minimal today that she didn’t even need to take any pain meds! I’m assuming the liver swelling has gone down, thank God. Now we just have to get her strength up so she can get another procedure on the 28th. Thanks again for the all the kind words and support.

I too hope that your mums swelling goes down and that the pain goes away as well. Please let us know how she gets on and remember that we are all here for you.
My best wishes to you and your mum,

September 5, 2011 at 8:10 pm #52476gavinModeratorKatie,
I am so sorry to hear what your mum is going through right now. I so hope that her doctors get to what is causing this pain so that they can do something about it. No one should have to go through this and I would insist that they try something else to get your mums pain under control. When my dad was in hospice care and he had pain, they gave him pain killing injections as and when he needed them and that dealt with his pain. He was also on other pain meds at the time and the injections when needed were an extra to these. Maybe you could speak with your mums doctors about some type of pain injections? As Marion has said to you, there are so many meds that can help with pain and I so hope that your mum gets some relief here. Thinking of your mum right now.
Best wishes to you and your mum,
Gavin

this happened to my mother. She was in tremendous pain even before her chemoembolization treatment. After the CE treatment it did seem to get worse. They did scan after scan and test after test to see what it could be but nothing ever showed up. We were told that it was because her tumors were so large, the biggest being 9cm x 9cm pressing on the other organs and then the treatment from the CE could be causing the pain as well. She was also on Dilaudid but a PCA pump, which also didn’t help. She was also on a Fentanyl patch every 72 hours. Unfortunatley nothing ever seemed to help the pain and they said that there was nothing else to give her. She had a 70% liver resecetion and the pain continued, mostly under her rib cage and she had a hard time breathing like something was pressing on her lungs. Once again, nothing showed up.
Also, we were told that my mothers stage IV CC was inoperable too. After 6 months of chemo and one chemoembolization treatment, she had the liver resection and “supposedly” all the cancer was gone. Our oncologist told us that it was impossible for the surgery, and the surgeon didn’t agree. Worth getting a second opinion.
I will pray for you and your family. I know that it is tough watching your mother suffer and feeling so helpless. Stay strong!

Two things of most concern with advanced CC are: excruciating pain and/or relentless nausea. Please, insist on having your Mom’s pain controlled. We live in an age where no one should have to suffer from pain and there are plenty of narcotics available to help ease your Mom’s suffering. Please, insist on it.

MarionSeptember 5, 2011 at 4:17 pm #52473katielinnMemberHey Lainy–I would assume that they could see if that was the case on the chest and belly CT scans that they did? The doc came in this morning and thinks that it’s pain in her liver caused by the CC. So my poor mom is very discouraged because she is in major pain and cannot fathom putting up with this Yes, I definitely can’t wait until I can talk to our docs at JH tomorrow!
Thanks for your response
September 5, 2011 at 1:25 pm #52472lainySpectatorAw, Katie, I am so sorry to hear this. I had a weird thought. Could it be appendix? Could it be Gall Bladder? I had a Gall Bladder attack and the pain was excruiating! I don’t know of anyone where Dilaudid or Morphine or Fentanyl did not take care of the pain in the case of CC. Oh, ,I feel so bad for her and for you having to feel so helpless. I am sure tomorrow cannot come fast enough!
September 5, 2011 at 11:10 am #52471katielinnMemberWell…we have been back in a hospital for 3 days now and we still don’t know what’s wrong. Mom’s pain is EXCRUCIATING and she is on dilauded and still feels the pain. They did a belly CT scan yesterday and we have yet to hear the results. Mom’s concerned that this could just be pain from the CC…is that possible??!
Also, her Calcium levels were high so they’ve been treating that as well. Is that normal? I just wish they could figure this out! And mom is terrified that she will be stuck in bed, in constant pain when we do finally go home.
I’m anxiously awaiting our docs at JH to return on Tues so I can get some answers.

September 3, 2011 at 4:22 pm #52468jladamsMemberKatie-just a suggestion- I am not a doctor. If I remember your mom had her
chemoembolization at Hopkins.
Did you call the attending on call at JH? Did your mom have blood work? Did the ER staff take her tempature? Just a thought.
My first chemo-embolization worked very well. I hope she feels better. JohannaSeptember 3, 2011 at 3:19 pm #52469katielinnMemberHer pain is located on her right side, at the bottom part of her ribcage. We had a CT of that area and they didn’t see anything. They suggested that it could be the liver pressing on something that is causing pain. She was sent home from the hospital on Dilaudid (spelling?) and in no pain, but it just came back
