to all thanks so much for all your help. we found out the problem of all the pain the cancer has now moved onto the bowel and constricted it so he had surgery last sunday. the surgeon said it was a success but it has spread all along the bowel so this will probably happen again. we are still waiting to hear from the new oncology team to see what they have been planned. once again thanks for all your help and support will keep you all informed. Julie

the other commonly use same class of antibiotics (quinolones) is Levaquin,it also comes in an oral liquid form. side effect of Nausea/Vomiting=7%/2%Abdominal discomfort, diarrhea are among the GI side effects listed for both med.
if too expensive for the oral liquid form;you can try to crush the tablet, disolves in about 30ml(2tablespoonful) of water;give it with food.( exception is for CIPRO XR long acting tab)
For most antibiotics, it recommended to take them 1 hour before or 2 hr after meal to provide better drug absorbption;the above suggestion to give with food is to minimize the side effects but still provide enough drug tx for the pt’s need.
October 24, 2010 at 3:42 pm #4326932coupeSpectatorIt is of course possible that he is having a reaction to the Cipro. I myself didn’t but had violent reactions to Bactrim. Also, Ceftin causes me to just feel ‘unwell’ while I’m taking it. But there ought to be a little investigation to figure that out and not just blame it on a spread of cancer. So… the right move is see another onc. Just my opinion…
Grace and Peace to your husband,
bobOctober 24, 2010 at 12:39 pm #43268gavinModeratorHi Gissy,
I also agree with what has been said regarding finding a new onc for your husband and I hope that you can find an experienced one very soon.
My best wishes to you and your husband,
Gavin

It very well could be the antibiotic. My husband has the same reaction with Bactrim. We thought he was sick from all of his liver issues and as soon as he quite taking Bactrim he was fine. He is allergic to Cipro but just breaks out in a beautiful pink, bumpy rash! Best wishes ! MaryOctober 24, 2010 at 7:21 am #43266marionsModeratorgissy…….Often I have wondered why anyone with a gastric problems is asked to take in oral medicine. I made sure to have everything possible ordered in suppositories in order to spare my husband some of the issues associated with gastric upset.
(PCL1029, if you are reading this: does Cipro come in any other form than oral or IV solution?)
Julie….If the spread of cancer is less than 1cm a scan will not be able to pick it up, as the thickness of the scan itself is 1 cm. I agree, another opinion is warranted. Also, you are mentioning a 10 km weight gain. How quickly did your husband put on this weight? You might want to make sure to mention this to the next physician.
Good luck and please, stay in touch.
Best wishes,
MarionOctober 24, 2010 at 5:52 am #43265lainySpectatorJulie, you have already made the right decision. I would go to another ONC and not even look back! Make sure the new ONC has dealt with CC before and that your husband is not his first patient. You are right none of us are doctors but we sure speak from a lot of experience. Why is your husband on an antibiotic and where is he being treated. What did this ONC give yoou as a diagnosis and how did he plan to treat your husband.
October 24, 2010 at 2:57 am #4206gissyMemberHi all
Was wondering if anyone has been on this antibiotic and did you have stomach pain. My husband is on this and is suffering terribly from it. His doctors have come to the conclusion, with out much investigation, that all the cramping and pain has come from the spread of his cancer. His ct scan didn’t show any spread but a 10ml fluid drain showed cancer cells. He was on this drug earlier and it caused vomiting and cramps/pain so it was changed to intravenous now it’s back on orals. In anyone’s experience has a spread that can’t be picked up on a ct scan able to cause this much stomach pain, or do you think it could be the drug. Side affects listed mention cramping/pain several times. It appears that as soon as his doctors can put anything down to the cancer all investigations stop. His current oncologist has admitted that if the cancer has spread he as no idea where to go to from here. Naturally we are changing oncologists, if he was at the stage of needing hospice care he would, but he’s put on 10kg is up and about except for the pain which keeps him in bed otherwise is in pretty good condition considering. I understand that most of this “family” is patient or caregiver, and very few are in the medical field, but any info that can be given is greatly received. Naturally we are going to bring this up with the new “team” it’s just if I have a bit more understanding of what he maybe going through I will be able to try and get this sorted out. Thanks for listening Julie -
