My father-in-law had stents placed and they were changed every 3-4 months for palliative care and this was done 6 times. Not to bad for a 6 month prognosis at iniatial diagnosis. He finally lost his battle after 23 months. I would also suggest a biopsy as Jeff stated, after all how can you treat the unknown. I wish you and your mom the best of luck and I am thinking of you.

Stan : not sure on the stents. Just type in your search the word stents and it’ll give you all the informstion you need. I would most certainly ask for a biopsy and pathology report. If you are your mothers legal cargiver that Doctor should be answering your questions. If a biopsy was not conducted how do they know she has CC. You said they removed 3 stones , that alone is enough to block the flow bile and cause juandice. If this docotor has a problem talking with you go to the hospital administrator or patient advocates office in the hospital and let them know clearly you would like some answers to your questions. Sometimes the answers are there and lack of communications is the culprit.
JeffG.I’m glad I found this forum and know that we are not the only ones dealing with this
cancer. I’d like to ask a couple of additional questions. How long does a stent usually last? If we start seeing signs of jaundice does that mean that the stent is just blocked or is it a sign that the cancer is progressing ? Also at the time when the stent was inserted they did remove 3 stones, but it does not look like they did a biopsy because
there was no pathologist report . All the doctor’s discharge report said was that it was
likely CC and the prognosis was poor. Should a biopsy have been done and should I request one be done ? I know I am asking a lot of questions but I am having trouble getting any answers from the doctor. Any help would be appreciated.Stan
Stan: Stents are used to open the ducts to allow the bile to properly flow. I know many people who have had the stents replaced several times as they tend to get clogged up or the CC advances and leakage begins and different size stents can be used but only for so long. As long as there is no blockage or leakage there is hope of being around longer than the doctor predicts. As far as being to old for radiation or surgery depends on her overall health, which only you and the doctors can determine. I wish you and your Mom the best. 89 years is quite an achievement these days. JeffG.
My mother was diagnosed with this disease on December 1, 2006. We were told that she had less than three months to live as she is too old (89) for surgery or radiation.
We live in Toronto and we have already set up palliative care. I will provide more information later but I do have an initial question. At the time of diagnosis a stent was put in to reduce the jaundice which seems to be working. My question is since than my mom has had none of the symptoms of the cancer. Is this a short term thing or is this something we should be encouraged with. Any reply would be appreciated as this is new to us as I am sure it is new to a lot of people.Thanks
