Crissie…. Biliary sludge consisting of epithelial cells and bacteria causes the stents to occlude (block.) Additionally, in cases where the stent is placed through or near the tumor, then yes, tumor progression can invade the stent if and when the patient does not respond to treatment. In the majority of cases though, blockage occurs due to accumulation of sludge. In order to put your mind at ease, it is best to speak to the physician.

Hi Crissie, not to worry, stents just seem to clog, it does not always mean CC is progressing . My husband had plastic and they were changed every 6 weeks to 2 months for a couple of years. The itching and stuff should stop in a day or so. Hang on and hang in.

Crissie – My husband never had stents so far but from what I understand from others is that they can clog up at times and need to be changed or cleaned out. I am sure that plenty of other will chime in on this pretty quick.

I just found out my dad’s metal stent got clogged. His urine changed color then he began to itch. They made an apt to replace the stent then it seemed to unclog. They still put a plastic stent inside the metal one.

Can they just clog and unclog like that? Is this bad that it is clogging…meaning progression of disease?
