John had two drains externally, so they always thought it was that, but the cultures would come out negative. Very frustrating………….

We have the same problem. When my dad has a blood infection, it is present and always shows up right away, yet he still gets fevers and nothing shows up, even after days and days of cultures. He has no drains, no open wounds, they are perplexed…

OK – glad to know you mght be able to take care of this at home. Fevers were a huge problem for my son….and they were never able to tell where they were coming from. They used to do a large number of blood cultures, and then they couldn’t get an answer anyway! Best wishes…..

Nancy-His onc. knows of the fever. He had blood work yesterday and five days of IV antibiotics last week in the hospital. His fever broke overnight, but is back on and off today. We may do home IV antibiotics Friday. I hope I can get it set up.

Highsmith – If his fever is that high, he needs to be checked at the hospital. Infections are a big problem when you are neutropenic. Our oncologist used to say anything over 100 – go to the hospital. He is probably very sleepy as a result of the fever and the chemo. Hope things look better soon. Vent away….that’s what we all do here – Nancy

My dad, finally. after many consults and false starts, did three rounds of Gemzar in December. They did reduce the third one by 25% due to low numbers, followed by a week in the hospital and nutripenia and neutrophil shots. His numbers rebounded and he did too, but we went in today for a Gem/Cis round and it has been decided he is not healthy enough for Cis, we are only doing 75% of rec Gem and doing two weeks and then relooking at the options. Total disappointment as we are at the bare minimum for Gem and likely not going to be able to add anything. We have been home for six hours and his fever is already 102.2. He has slept the entire day and, although he responds when I wake him, is not really that with it. I am so disappointed. His tumor markers continue to rise and his health declines. I have exhausted the questions and answers about other treatments and waiting and a fifth opinion. I am not sure there are any answers to the above, just needed to vent…….
