MSKCC is an amazing hospital and at the front of cancer research. We went there when my Dad was diagnosed. Sadly he was not able to get a liver resection but we did extensive research on chemo before surgery. It is now the preferred method for many cancers, including ovarian and breast. I know this is a hard time but it is great that you have the option of a resection. It is a rare cancer and MSKCC sees more of it than most hospitals so they have more experience. My Dad’s cancer was in both side of his liver and duct so he couldn’t get resection. However, he outlived the time from he was given from another hospital by 200% thanks to the care and chemo at MSKCC.

    Hi Christine,

This neoadjuvant chemotherapy is to help shrink the tumor to reduce the extent of the surgery. This method has been used in other cancers as well and shown clinical benefit. I know MSKCC is a leading cancer center in this field. Chemotherapy after the surgery is to eliminate the residual cancer cells, sometimes microscopic to prevent cancer from coming back.

    Best wishes,
    Lee

I had my second opinion at MSKCC yesterday and they are recommending I do 4-6 months of chemo doing a combination of a Pump directly into my liver and through an IV before resection.

While I just want this tumor out they want to attack the cancer before surgery.

So confused as my other DR wanted to do surgery first then chemo.

    Anyone had a similar experience?

    Thanks!
