Hi,
Short of breath(SOB) can be a side effect of the chemotherapy or disease related. I suspect there are fluids in the lungs .but i am not a doctor but a patient like your mom .Oncologist office visit ASAP is highly recommended.
God bless.June 7, 2012 at 2:42 am #61800mrsdSpectatorMy grandmother is also experiencing shortness of breath going 40 feet or so and is now needing to stay propped up at night to prevent it as well. We have made an appointment with her cardiologist and they believe it to be congestive heart failure.
She had problems with it in the hospital prior to her resection surgery with extreme fluid retention to around 20 pounds. They used lasiks to remove the fluid and once her resection was done, her swelling and ascities began to go away. Shortness of breath in such short distances may be heart related. Once fluid backs up it gathers in the body and leaks into tissues around the heart and lungs. I would ask your Mom’s physician about CHF (congestive heart failure). There is some medication that can help with that if that is the case.
As far as what happens next, I don’t know either. My grandma was diagnosed with Stage IIA CC and had a successful resection but ended up with 1 positive margin. We are pursuing oncologists to learn about her options. Best of luck to you and your mom.June 3, 2012 at 11:21 pm #61799lainySpectatorAmy, not sure if Mom’s shortness of breath is from the Chemo or progression of CC, only her Doctor can say. As for progression we now have posts under the heading (on our home page) Supportive, Palliative and Hospice Care. And as you said everyone is different. I would suggest calling a Hospice facility and see if you can get one of their booklets which pretty much details about the last 2 months for anyone in this type of situation. Also google Hospice on line and there are many that give some excellent suggestions. I would let Mom’s ONC know immediately about her breathing! Please let us know.

I’ve been looking online for a while to get answers for this, but decided to once again come to this board, who seem to know A LOT!
My mom has had 2 chemotherapy treatments, the last one was Tuesday (5 days ago)
She has had so many issues thus far, even before chemotherapy. Fluid build up in abdomen ( now drained weekly) VERY swollen feet, stent issues, severe fatigue, etc.
But recently in the past two days she is very short of breath even after just a trip to the bathroom. I always jump to worst case scenarios, but I’m wondering if it’s the cancer spreading to her lungs, or a side effect from chemo?? Maybe this is common.
Also, I’d love to hear about the progression of this cancer, which is impossible to find online. I realize everyone different but what happens? Spreads to liver, abdomen (she’s there) then what? Typically?
Any answers would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you
